    فهل التقينا قبلَ ذا بمكانِ؟

    Your eyes hold what has reclaimed my being;

So have we met somewhere before this?

My eyes?! I do not know whether we have, but

Before the meeting, the two phantoms may meet.

    قدرٌ هيَ الدُّنيا على الإنسانِ

    As for coincidence, I do not believe in it;

This world is fate laid upon humankind.

    فلنكتفي مِنْ جوْدِهِ بالآني

    And just as time embraced us, it tore others apart;

So let us be content with the present its bounty gives.

You have spoken only the truth; indeed, our life

Is governed, like the sun, by rotation.

And our worries do not end in a reality

That, like its rulers, has two faces.

We pursue a thing as long as we live; then, if

We attain it, we lose interest in it seconds later.

    Running is our cruelest killer—

The running of mortals across a perishing existence.

Do you love? No, but I am loved a great deal,

And I suffer from women and their closeness!

You may think me a liar! But

Do not laugh at a reality that made me weep.

Where is that on which I squandered my feelings,

So it could live within me in comfort and safety?

I called it “my love” and betrayed my fears

To live it—yet it slew me!

Here I am: I have lost half my poems

While striving for a speck of reassurance.

How long shall I display joy, while my smile

Holds all that it holds of sorrow?

I did not seek this world for it to break me, as

A woman shatters the ribs of a lovesick man.

When I fell, I looked; I saw no one compassionate,

But I saw the gloating of close friends!

Wishes I forsook tell you about me,

Not because I was unable to attain them, nor because I was remiss.

I realized, albeit late, that contentment

Is the drowning person's rope and the source of solace.

And I won myself back when I accepted my pains,

So I gave my heart rest, and my tongue rested.

For all the disappointment I faced,

True consolation lay in the Qur'an.

And your love—how did you lose it? How did it end up

As a few quotations on the walls?

Do not ask, for poetry is the home of my secrets,

And my poems were fashioned for flight.

    أمّا فؤادي فهو مِلكُ بياني

    The sky became my dominion after rebellion;

As for my heart, it belongs to my eloquence.

If a man's tears could restore his glory,

Kisra would have wept blood over the Iwan.

So why do I complain now, leaning on

This poem, while tears are close at hand?

My anxiety over all the details that

Never end is my share of addiction.

If I hide what I want, then I

Hide it within me for fear of deprivation.

What about the sea that murders us?

Put this question to the shores.

And I shall go now, awaiting tomorrow,

And perhaps I shall meet you after some time.

So remember this from me, if we do not meet:

When deliverance passes through the homelands

For the Muslims drowning in their helplessness,

The world will be surprised by a second face.
