على قلبي أخافُ وأنتَ قادرْ

فعلِّمني الرّمايةَ، ثمَّ غادر

I fear for my heart, while you hold the power.

So teach me to shoot, then leave.

بأعماقي أرى الأسوارَ تهوي

وأنتَ مُحَصَّنٌ خلفَ السَّواتر

Deep within me, I see the walls fall,

while you are fortified behind the barricades.

تُقطِّعُ بالدلالِ نياط قلبي

وتلبسُ وجهَ جبَّارِ الخواطر

With your coyness, you sever my heartstrings,

and wear the face of one who mends hearts.

تغيبُ مُقاتلاً، وتعودُ طفلاً

يُقبِّلُ أعيُني، ويقولُ: حاضر!

You go away a fighter and return a child,

who kisses my eyes and says, "As you wish!"

أتيتُكَ حاملاً أرَقَ الليالي

أُفتشُ فيكَ عن صَدْرٍ لسَاهر

I came to you bearing the nights' sleeplessness,

I search within you for a bosom for one who lies awake.

تَنَازَعُني المَكارهُ والأماني

وتختلطُ المشاعرُ بالمشاعر

Hardships and hopes tug at me,

and feelings mingle with feelings.

وألمَحُ من بعيدٍ ألفَ نارٍ

فأحضُنُها، وتُغريني المَخاطر!

And from afar I glimpse a thousand fires,

so I embrace them, and dangers entice me!

أسِحرٌ أنتَ؟ أيُّ هوىً رماني

فعلَّقَ مركبي بحبالِ شاعر؟

Are you magic? What passion has struck me

and so hung my boat from a poet's ropes?

لصحوكَ خذ ضبابي وانتظرني

سأمسَحُ من عيونِكَ كلَّ عابر

For your clarity, take my fog and wait for me;

I will wipe every passerby from your eyes.

لقد أحببتُ في عينيكَ موتي

وأنتَ برغمِ موتكَ بي، تُكابر

I have indeed loved my death in your eyes,

yet you, despite dying because of me, remain proudly defiant.

فكيفَ أنالُ من تقواكَ أمناً

وأنتَ بهجرِ من يهواكَ، فاجر!

How, then, can I find safety in your piety,

when you are wicked in forsaking the one who loves you!
