At the doors of a steamship,
At the gates of a ship
like a crown atop the sea's head,
With a crown above the sea

We met when the time was
before love, after noon.
Before love, after noon

I looked, and did not linger, but
I looked but did not stare, yet
she saw me as I was passing.
She saw me as I passed

فرحتُ أُديرُ أنظاري
وأُظهرُand displaying طلعةَthe look of المُغترthe self-satisfied man
وأُظهرُ طلعةَ المُغتر
So I began turning my gaze about,
I rejoiced to avert my eyes
and wearing a self-satisfied look.
And feign innocence

And Kisra, between her eyes,
While between her eyes
shakes the grave's dust off himself.
Kisra shakes off the dust of the grave

صديقي تحت جُنحِ السر
So he hastened to greet her with his smile—
So my friend smiled at her
my friend, under cover of secrecy.
Beneath the wings of secrecy

Then her friend caught him
But her friend repelled him
with an eye like a falcon's!
With eyes like an eagle's!

فقلبي عندَ ذاتِ الخصر
I left them both to their folly,
I left them to their passion
for my heart was with the shapely-waisted one.
While my heart lingered at her waist

I drew near and said nothing,
I drew near but said nothing
nor did my feigned pride help.
And my restraint meant nothing

Speechlessness devours my tongue,
My unruly tongue eats away at me
and how often before it had recited poetry!
How much poetry has it uttered before!

As is its habit when I fall in love,
As is its habit when I love
it falters even over a little prose.
It tightens, even at some prose

Indeed, she was at such a height
She was truly at a height
of flight as would bring an eagle down.
Where eagles dare not soar

And her defiance, created
without a shelter, above her mouth,
With no shelter, at the summit

A proud, sorcery-piercing nose
and a neck that pierced with magic.
And a bewitching brow

So I spoke to her, and she spoke to me,
I spoke to her, she spoke to me
nor will I tell you what purity was like.
But I shall not tell you of our chastity

Did she forget her friend?
By God, she has the same excuse as I.
By God, I have the same excuse

Why, when we fall in love,
Why is it that when we love
does time pass as life passes?
Time passes as quickly as life?
