وُقّيتَmay you be protected ماwhat فيكَconcerning you أَتَّقيهِI fear it
ونِلْتَand may you attain ماwhat النَّفْسُthe soul تَرتَجيهِhopes for it
May you be spared what I fear for you,
You were granted all I wish to be granted,
and attain what the soul hopes for.
And obtained what the soul aspires to obtain.
وأُعْمِيَتْand may it be blinded عنكto you عَيْنُthe eye دَهرٍTime
خُطوبُهits calamities تَنْتقيsingle out بَنيهits sons
And may the eye of Time be blinded to you—
The days have been blinded to you-
Time, whose calamities single out its sons.
Their misfortunes pick and choose their victims.
وزادكَand may He grant you more اللهُGod كُلَّevery فَضْلٍexcellence
يَفُتُّcrushes أَكبادَthe livers of حاسديهthose who envy it
And may God increase you in every excellence
And God has increased you in all merit-
that crushes the livers of those who envy it.
That splits open the livers of your enviers.
ونِلْتَand may you attain منfrom صَفْوِthe purest part of كُلِّevery عِزٍّglory
ماwhat مثْلُthe like of عُلْياكَyour exalted rank يَقْتَضيهdeserves it
And may you gain, from the purest of all glory,
And you attained the quintessence of all honor-
what a rank as lofty as yours deserves.
None but the most highborn deserve the likes of you.

And wherever you are, may you remain a raincloud,
You remain, wherever you are, a rainfall-
showering good fortune upon those who watch for its rain.
That showers blessings on those who revile you.
ياO راحلاًdeparting one والفؤادُand the heart منّيof mine
يَظلُّremains أَدْنَىthe closest of مُسايريهhis fellow travelers
O departing one, while this heart of mine
O traveler, while my heart remains with you,
remains the closest of your fellow travelers,
Following as closely as your escort.
وَدِدْتُI wish لوif كنتُI were حيثُwhere قلبيmy heart
فكنتُand so I would be منamong بَعْضِsome of حَاضريهthose in his presence
I wish I were where my heart is,
I wish that I were wherever my heart is,
so I might be among those in your presence.
That I could be among those in your presence.
وأينand how far مِمّاfrom what أَوَدُّI desire دَهْريmy fate
وأَينand where ماwhat الحُرُّthe noble man يَشْتَهيهdesires it
Yet how far my fate lies from what I wish,
But where am I in relation to my desires?
and how remote is what a noble man desires!
Where are the free man's wants?
أَقْعدَنيkept me back عنfrom ذُراكَyour lofty abode حتّىso that
حُرِمْتُI was deprived of ماwhat عَمَّreached all زائريهits visitors
What kept me from your lofty abode, so that
My stillness from your company has forbidden me
I was denied what all its visitors received,
What your visitor is freely granted.
صَومٌa fast أتانيcame upon me وفِيَّand within me ضَعْفٌweakness
منfrom مَرَضٍan illness كنتُI was أَشْتَكيهsuffering from it
was a fast that came upon me while I was weak
The fast came upon me while I was weakened
from an illness I had been suffering.
By an illness which plagued me.
والصّومُand fasting يُرخيweakens القَوِيَّthe strong أَيضاًtoo
فكيفso how حالُthe condition of الضَّعيفِthe weak فيهduring it
And fasting weakens even the strong,
Fasting wears down even the strong-
so how do the weak fare during it?
So what of the feeak during it?
