Whoever the feast may gladden, I am a man
Whoever is made happy by Eid, I am a man
whose string of tears is broken during it.
Whose tears on it are held back

والدَّهْرُand Time فيماin what ساءَcaused grief مَتْبوعimitated
I am the one whose sorrows it has stirred,
I who roused his sorrows
and Time is imitated in the grief it causes.
While time in evil is followed

Every close friend, after my delight in his company—
Each friend after intimacy with him forgotten
my greatest share of us is seeing him off.
My greatest share of him is to accompany at parting
متىwhen أَرىshall I see ياO ربِّmy Lord شَمْليmy circle بهمْwith them
وهْوand it كماas أهواهI desire it مَجْموعgathered together
When, my Lord, shall I see my circle with them,
When, O Lord, shall I see my being united with them
gathered together, just as I wish it to be?
And it is as I love, all brought together
