Making her dwelling pearls, so it remained

A cheek where grace is illuminated at dawn
to the envy of the cloud driven by the south wind.
While the cheek's jealousy spurs on ostriches

Whenever its flash is watched, it makes me drink my tears,
Whenever the cupbearer quenched my thirst with tears
and waters a toothstick with musk and wine.
And quenched the musk drink and wine

for whose sake people have hung reproach in my ears.
That has deafened people’s hearing of blame

She spoke true but also disease

“Wine was forbidden but is now permitted”

This is how fate toys with me, its turns
with sorrows lasting as long as Time endures.
With concerns that linger ceaselessly

The days' daughters in their betrayal

Are like their sons, unrestrained

أشمسَfound sunshine الوافدُthe visitor منهfrom him وأغاماand became clouded
أشمسَ الوافدُ منه وأغاما
Whenever generosity's assembly thrilled at him,
By He who was the Caliph's father I have a victor
the visitor found sunshine from him and clouds.
Against fate’s afflictions if brought to judge
بأبيin Abu الخَطّابِal-Khattab ليfor me مُنتَصَرٌa defender

منagainst خطوبِthe calamities of الدّهرِTime إنif جُرْنَthey act unjustly احتكاماin judgment
من خطوبِ الدّهرِ إن جُرْنَ احتكاما
In Abu al-Khattab I have a defender
And a sword wiping their necks
against Time's calamities, if they judge unjustly,
Its reverse a description for it, my valued concern

and a sword that wipes away their necks:
A sword nurtured by a shoulder
its reverse describes him—my pearls, a token of care.

بحُسامٍ قد نَماهُ عَضُدٌ

In Husam, whom ‘Adud raised,
You will not see a nick, determination fulfilled
then made tread the heads of his equals.
Unless one called father of determination, nick

غيرَ مَنْ عُدَّ أباً نَدْباً هُماما
You will see no perfect, noble, high-spirited man
O son of one whose hand empowered the kingdom
except one whose father was reckoned noble and high-spirited.
Thus he protects it from the commoners
ياO ابْنَson of مَنْone who شُدَّتْwas strengthened يدُthe hand of المُلْكِkingship بهِthrough him

O son of him through whom kingship's hand was strengthened,
And sufficed them of him to unite them
who came to protect the grazing herds against the troops.
A legacy flowing daily from generosity

It sufficed them that he gather them:
A legacy, and the army like its rain
a cloud piled high with generosity,
Raining blessings, and deadly disease

a cloud whose army is like raindrops,
They were conditioned to rely on them
raining blessings and swift, deadly death.

He was trained in patience under their importunity,
The tribes take his manners
as the sacred Corner never tires of ritual touching.
Yet the biased still reap no benefits

Peoples draw upon his cultivated manners,
If the lowest of his knowledge's face shone
and the borrower of fire refused to gather flame.
The people's shortage would fold in completeness

If he unveiled the face of even his slightest knowledge,
All he utters is admired
the deficiency of Time's children would turn to perfection.
For it is pearls, spreading and organizing

All that he utters is passed around as a gift:
Its signs dazzled, so perfection
pearls, scattered or strung.

Composed of it and his supremacy

Ranks within it, and its lofty heights,
O leader making his claim
seize the envier's nose and rub it in dust.
Those seeking virtue their eyes' leader

He owned virtue, so protected it
the seeker of bounty a guide for his own eyes,
And thus whoever made the paths protector

he possessed excellence and defended it,
Take it from a frequent drinker of thirst
as does one who becomes a protector of the roads.

Take it from one arriving thirsty at water,
Deafening listeners’ ears, they listened
after circling and hovering around it for an age:
Filling pearls, and precious gems

an earring for the ears of those who listened,
An envious one sees it out of envy
filled with pearls, single and paired.

An envier sees it, out of envy,
So remain for glory and supremacy, and live
as deafness in the ear and a plug caused by it.

Wearing out nights in honor
forever in the shade of honor and blessings,

With a sword nurtured by a shoulder
striking true, without fear of injury.
