Were it not for my hope of meeting him again
I would not live an hour in his absence.
I would not live a moment in my lamentations

Who has never tired of his long residence within it.
Never in my life did I tire of his company

A gazelle: when release is sought for an ardent lover
A gazelle, when the doe is called by a love-smitten one
From his love, curing that lover's sickness proves impossible.
His cure despairs of healing his affliction

A wearer of a short tunic: if he stretched his curled sidelock,
A partridge whose crop pouch extends when called
Its twist would suffice to fasten his robe.
Its knotting completes his necklace's order

A branch when he sways in his arena,
A bough flexing in its field is a lion roused in its den
A lion when he rises in the fury of battle.

With one he assaults his lovers,
While my body without the soul clings to its existence
And with the other he assaults his enemies.
So I wonder that I live after we parted

A moon who became my soul, then departed from me;
And regret that I die before we meet
The body's continued existence depends upon the soul.
I want nothing from fate but that it recedes from rejecting me

My wonder is that I lived after his departure,
Its events at dawn and dusk make one weary of its calamities
And my grief is that I died before meeting him.
They obscured the end of their matter when turbid

I bring near but it persists in driving it away.

Morning and evening, the calamities of its ordeals

Follow one another, making a man weary of his soul.
So he may lift from the people their obscuring veil

Engulfing the people in his bounty
Of his blade, or kindles the fire of his intelligence.

He obtains through it an equal recompense
Makes them flourish through his might and generosity.

Drowned for all people in his blessings.

The enemies' pursuit of superiority over his sublimity is vain
Without a gift from him to match it.

Even against their will, they are his paltriest ransom.

But might in its entirety lies in his dictation
By enemies striving unjustly against his eminence.

That a man be remembered on his day of recompense.

And seek refuge in God from his destruction.

Who dazzled mankind with his radiance or his grandeur.

Before their bounty-seeker echoed his camel-song.

All honor, all honor, lay in his ratification.

Never did I hope for prompt success in any quest
Cast in my drinking and nourishment
But your smiling welcome was among its heralds.
So help me, if you permit, to escape from a house
لكنّbut دهراًa Time رائعاتُterrifying صُروفُهits reversals
كَرَّتْreturned بشِدَّتهِwith its harshness بُعَيدَshortly after رخائهits ease
But a Time whose dread reversals
Where my patience is exhausted by its prolonged tribulation
Returned with harshness shortly after its ease,
With a startled horse like water in its galloping
كانused to اعتناؤكyour care بيfor me يَراهsee it ويَستحيand feel ashamed
وأراهand I see it قدalready ألقَىhas cast off لثامَthe veil حَيائهof its shame
Used to see your care for me and feel ashamed;
But like lightning in its onset
Yet I see it has now cast aside the veil of its shame.
A horse when held by my palm does not shy

مُلْقاةِcast فيinto شُرْبيmy drink ومنand of أقذائهits impurities
For today I have grown weary of its murk,
After a pasture and its sudden start
Cast into my drink, and of its impurities.
On it, whether I ride every morning a knight
فأعنْso help علىwith هَربيmy flight إذنthen منfrom منزلٍa dwelling
فَنِيَwas exhausted اصطبارِيmy endurance منby طويلthe length بَلائهof its affliction
So help me flee, then, from a dwelling
Or a knight when I travel before evening
Whose long afflictions have exhausted my endurance,
You made a prior promise to me, a prior promise
بِمُهْملَجٍwith a smooth-pacing horse كالماءlike water عندduring مَسيرهits going
لكنّهbut it كالبَرْقِis like lightning فيin تَعْدائهits galloping
On a smooth-pacing horse, like water in its going,
So what makes you slow in fulfilling it?
Yet like lightning when it gallops.
Abu al-Futuh, no guarantor denies it
فَرسٌa horse إذاwhen ملكَتْهpossesses it كَفّيmy hand لمnot أُرعْI am frightened
منby بُعْدِthe remoteness مُنتجَعٍof a pasture ومنand by عُدَوائهits rough terrain
A horse that, once my hand possesses it, leaves me fearless
Yet I remained in my homeland, captive of its disregard
Of a distant pasture and its rough terrain.
Perhaps I will see my dear one before me

And upon it, if I am a horseman in the morning,
Appearing splendidly before the horses in his vanity
Or a horseman if I set out before its evening.
And on the saddlecloth hopefully I will be behind him
وبسابقٍand for a racer ليI have منكَfrom you وَعْدٌa promise سابقٌprior

For a racer I have from you a prior promise;
Seeking his shoulder's shelter, roaming confused
So why, I wonder, do you persist in delaying it?
Obstacles prevented my mare from passing
وأبوand Abu (father of) الفُتوحal-Futuh (victories) وليسand does not يُنْكِرُdeny ضامِنٌa guarantor

فَبقيتُso I remained فيin وطَنيmy homeland أسيرَa captive جَفائهto its cruelty
Abu al-Futuh, who does not deny it, stands surety;
So I remained in my homeland, captive of its disregard
So I remained in my homeland, captive to its cruelty.
It shackled me amidst the dwellings, and one grown
فعسىso perhaps أرىI may see طِرْفيmy noble steed بطَرْفيwith my eye مَرّةًonce

Perhaps I may see my noble steed with my own eye one day,
In his abode, his salvation lies in its deliverance
Strutting before the horses in its pride.
Until I took refuge in a lord of leadership
وعلىand on السِفارِjourneys عسىperhaps أصيرُI may become بظَهْرِهupon its back

مُستظهراًsupported فأهزَّso I toss عِطْفَthe shoulder التّائهof a swaggerer
And on journeys, perhaps upon its back I shall become
Whose favor is directed to its nobility
Well-supported, tossing my shoulder like a swaggering man.
And I complained to the cruel times of tribulations
مَنعتْprevented موانعُobstacles أنْthat أمُرَّI travel لِطيَّتيto my destination
فبقيِتُso I remained فيin وطنيmy homeland أسيرَa captive جَفائهto its cruelty
Obstacles prevented me from going toward my destination,
And my heart suffering, captive of its ordeal
So I remained in my homeland, captive to its cruelty.
So he removed the shackles of afflictions and returned me
قَيّدْتنيthey bound me وَسَطَamid الدّيارthe dwellings ومَنand whoever نَبَتْbecame inhospitable
دارٌa home بهto him فَنجاتُهthen his deliverance بنَجائهis through his escape
They bound me amid the dwellings; and one whom
Fettered in fortune from his endowments
A home repels finds deliverance through escape.
Thus I remain, not knowing whether I became
حتّىuntil لجْأتُI sought refuge إلىwith ربيبِone nurtured in رئاسةٍleadership
إفضالُهhis beneficence وقْفٌis devoted علىto فُضَلائهhis men of merit
Until I sought refuge with one nurtured in leadership,
Among his intimates or his freed ones
Whose beneficence is devoted to his men of merit.
Hope lived for every heart in despair
وشَكوتُand I complained للزّمنِof Time المُسىءthe cruel حوادِثاًcalamities
وفؤادِيَand my heart العانيthe captive أسيرُis a prisoner عَنائهof its torment
I complained of calamities wrought by cruel Time,
When you arrived and were among its sons
My captive heart a prisoner of its torment.
And so the religion of God gained in might
فأزالso he removed أقيادَthe fetters الخطوبِof calamities ورَدَّنيand left me
مُتقيّداًbound بالغُرِّby the splendid منamong آلائهhis blessings
He removed the fetters of calamities, and left me
When it saw you and you were among its chiefs
Bound instead by his splendid blessings.
So choose the good counsel of a servant
فبقيتُso I remained لاnot أدريknowing أمنwhether among أُسَرائهِhis captives
أصبحتُI had become بينamong النّاسthe people أمor طُلَقائهhis freedmen
So I remained, not knowing whether among his captives
Who has no heirs left but his possessions
I had come to stand among men, or among his freedmen.
And take precedence in it over his praise and loyalty
عاشcame alive الرّجاءُhope لكلِّfor every قَلْبٍheart آيسٍdespairing
لمَاwhen قَدِمْتَyou arrived وكنتَand you were منamong أبنائهits sons
Hope came alive in every despairing heart
So the like of his praise and loyalty diminish
When you arrived, yourself one of its sons.
You remain like a star, rising for the people
وكذاكand likewise دينُthe faith اللهِof God زادgrew جلالةًin majesty
لمّاwhen رآكit saw you وأنتand you منamong رُؤسائهits chiefs
Likewise God's faith grew in majesty
In your age, long, and in your ascendance, lofty
When it saw you, one of its chiefs.
In the shade of perfect, absolute kingship
فَالْحَقْso come to the aid of بحُسْنِwith soundness الرّأىof judgment مُهجةَthe soul خادمٍof a servant
لمnot يَبقremains للحدثانِfor Fate غيرُexcept ذَمائهhis last flicker of life
So, with sound judgment, come to the aid of a servant's soul:
Vanquishing the darkness of injustice with its light
Only his last flicker of life remains for Fate.
Except that it is like the crescent
واسَتْبقِand preserve فيكfor you ثناءهhis praise وَولاءهand his loyalty
فَيقِلُّfor rare is مثْلُthe like ثنائهof his praise وَولائهand his loyalty
Preserve his praise of you and his loyalty to you,
Of the first night in its growth
For praise and loyalty like his are rare.
لاnever زلتَmay you cease to be مثْلَlike النّجمِthe star تَطلُعُrising للورىfor mankind
فيin عُمْرهِits lifespan طولاًlength وفيand in استِعلائهits height
May you ever rise like a star before mankind,
Long-lived as it, and as exalted.
فيunder ظلّthe shelter مُلْكٍof a reign كاملٍperfect نامٍgrowing معاًat once
يَجْلوdispels ظلامَthe darkness الظّلمِof injustice بَثُّthe spreading ضيائهof its light
Under a reign both perfect and still growing,
Whose spreading radiance dispels the darkness of injustice.
فكَماso, perfection (word begins) لهُits (word completion) للبدْرِthe full moon's إلاّexcept أنّهthat it
كهلالِlike the crescent أوَّلِof the first ليلةٍnight لنَمائهin its growth
So its perfection is the full moon's, except that it
Is like the first night's crescent in its growth.
