My companion made mention of the encampment.
My companion mentioned the camp, and his mention aroused thoughts in me,
So its recollection stirred thoughts in me.
I yearned with intense yearning and remembered the company of its people for a long time,
وحَنَنْتُand I yearned حَنّةَthe yearning of واجدٍa lovesick man طَرِبٍenraptured
وذكرتُand I remembered صُحبةَcompanionship with أهلِهits people دَهراfor a long time
And I yearned with the yearning of a lovesick, enraptured man,
So I hurried there until I visited it,
and remembered long companionship with its people.
With my wrap folded and my sword at my waist,
فجَعلْتُso I made حتّىuntil زُرْتُهُI visited it عَجِلاَin haste

So, until I reached it in haste, I made
And for the chief minister wholeheartedly,
my weary mount a sash, and the wilderness a waist.
When I heard the good news at An-Nuway,

لمّاwhen سَمِعْتُI heard علىacross النّوىthe distance بُشرىglad tidings
And of the lord of all the viziers,
I swore I would not slacken the reins,
when I heard glad tidings across the distance,
Until I see Hamadan and Al-Qasr,

I swore my hand would not draw in the rein
When I saw it from afar,
until we saw Hamadan and the palace.
I exclaimed ten times out of joy for it,
لمّاwhen نظرتُI looked إليهat it منfrom بُعُدٍa distance
I proclaimed 'God is greatest' منfrom طَربٍdelight لهat it عَشراten times
When I looked upon it from afar,
And I dismounted from the furthest range of my sight,
I cried 'God is greatest' ten times in delight.
Thankfully kissing the hand of the one who brought me the news,

And I dismounted at the farthest reach of my sight,
A sanctuary the beauties of this world flocked to,
kissing my mount's foreleg in thanks.

A sanctuary to which, from the world, have come
I swore he had never seen a sea before it,
all the finest qualities of its people, gathered as tribute.
Groups that return and groups that begin,

A surging sea—if a young man sees it,
Like the sea showing its ebb and flow,
I swear he has never seen a sea before it.
Its domes at dawn narrated tales,

Companies return, and other companies set forth,
Glittering, both small and large,
like the sea displaying flood and ebb.

Its domed tents resembled sea-foam in the morning light,
The palace makes eyes fall short with its magnificence,
gleaming, small ones and great ones alike.

With lions roaring around it,
with scattered anemones set amid them.
And that is why she called its tower Asad (Lion),

And the palace—so great the reverence for its silent master—
The sun of the sky, and that is enough pride for it!
the gaze falls utterly short of it.
When we arrived safely, each spent

A tower for earth's sun, encircled
The morning after arrival fulfilling a vow,
by lions roaring all around it.

And so it named its sign the Lion—
And telling the news of his matter,
the sun of heaven; that is pride enough for it.
You would see nations as if

When we arrived safely,
They were gathered for the day of their judgment,
each fulfilled a vow on the morning of his arrival.

Or discerning the dawn,
a town carried along, but not by night.

It would find no escape,

And you heard the calls to prayer from the flanks
their sticks, answering one another with taps.

their drums until they saw the dawn.

So they shook off the remnants of their sleepiness and fulfilled
of theirs, it would find no passage through the night.

مكنونةٌconcealed فيwithin طَيِّهits folds سِرّاsecretly
And knowledge of what Time will bring
My covenant with them, their tears
is secretly concealed within its folds.
Pour heavily when they grant us a trickle,
كمhow many فيهwithin it صُحْفِscrolls of ندىًgenerosity ولستand you do not تَرىsee

How many scrolls of generosity are within it! You do not see
How often I returned from them
a line of stinginess among them.
Regretfully, and my she-camels regretfully,
هذاthis الكمالُperfection علىin الحقيقةِtruth لاnot
ماwhat كانused to be يُذْكَرُmentioned قبْلَهbefore it ذِكراin mention
This is perfection in truth, not
I hoped to gain wealth from them
what used to be spoken of before it.
While misfortunes reckon their odd number as even!
إنّيindeed I لأذكُرُsurely remember معشراًa company عُهِدواonce known
ولربّماand sometimes تَتجدَّدُreturns الذّكرىthe memory
I do indeed remember a company once known,
I used to see all chests other than yours
and memories may sometimes return:
As a chest whose heart had become barren,
أبناءَsons of دَهرٍan age لاmay you not لَقِيتَencounter لهfrom it
ياO صاحِmy friend بعدَafter وفائهِits fidelity غَدراbetrayal
sons of an age—may you never meet from it,
All becameacles and their companion
my friend, betrayal after its fidelity.
Remained seeking water from them,

بلْrather لاnot يُساويis worth أمرُهits state الفِكراthought
My thoughts about its state find no end;
So today I came to the arm of a generous king
rather, its state is not worth a thought.
I am a guest of hope satisfied by his generosity,
عَهْدِيmy recollection بهمof them تُضحِيbecome دُموعُهمُtheir tears
غُزْراًabundant إذاwhenever وهَبواthey gave لناto us نَزراa pittance
I remember their tears becoming
And they prayed for the Sultan of people that
abundant whenever they gave us a pittance.
O victory's helper, glorify victory for him,
كمhow many رجعةٍreturns عنهمfrom them رجَعْتُreturned أناI
مُتَحّسِراًdisappointed وركائبيand my mounts حَسْرىworn out
How often I returned from them
And they went early to the parade ground and crowded it
disappointed, my mounts worn out!
For there the nomads and settled peoples meet,
أمّلْتُI hoped منهمfrom them أنto أنالَobtain غِنىًwealth
والحُولُand the cross-eyed تَحسَبُconsider شَفْعَهاtheir even numbers الوِتراodd
I hoped to gain wealth from them,
And the grandees see them
while the cross-eyed mistake their even numbers for odd.
Crowding, so they exclaim “God is Great”,
كُلُّall الصّدورِthe chief ministers سواكexcept you كنتُI used to أَرىsee
صدْراًa breast غداbecome منof قلبِهِits heart قَفراbarren
Every chief minister but you I used to see
And the infantry arrayed around them
as a breast become barren of its heart.
Guarding right and left,
كُلٌّeach غداbecame غُمْراًan ignoramus وصاحبُهand his companion
قدhad ظَلremained منهfrom him طالباًseeking غَمراabundance
Each became an ignoramus, while his companion
Their helmets tilting as if they are
kept seeking abundance from him.
Pieces of gardens garlanded with flowers,

But today I have reached a king's lofty heights,
And you see their sword belts halted
where the guest of hope is feasted by his generosity.
Like lines whose rhythm aligns the line,
ودَعَواand they prayed لسلطانِfor the sovereign of الأنامِmankind بأنْthat
أَعزِزْstrengthen لهfor him ياO ناصِرُHelper النّصراvictory
And they prayed for the sovereign of mankind:
And the king is like the blazing sun
'O Helper, strengthen victory for him!'
Dazzling our eyes beyond it,
وغدَواand they went in the morning إلىto الدّركاةِthe forecourt وازدحَمواand crowded together

فهُناكand there تَلقَىyou encounter البَدْوَdesert-dwellers والحَضراand townspeople
They went in the morning to the forecourt and crowded together;
And from the armies staring at him
there you encounter desert-dwellers and townspeople.
Surging seas you see around him green,
وأكابرُand the greatest الأُمَراءemirs تُبصِرُهمْyou see them

مُتحاشدِينَmassed together فتُكْبِرُso you deem great الأَمراthe spectacle
And the greatest emirs—you see them
Crowded from the greatness of what they witness
massed together, and deem the spectacle great.
They do not discern themselves from the ground by a handspan,
والبِيضُand the bright swords مُصلتَةٌdrawn تَحُفُّsurround بهمthem
وتَذودُand ward off منfrom يُمنَىthe right ومنand from يُسرىthe left
And drawn, bright swords surround them,
And you see the kings of earth humble
keeping guard on the right and on the left.
Standing before his throne belittled,
فَنٌّa spectacle أَجَدَّrenewed الدّهرُTime سُنّتَهits custom
ويَحارُand is bewildered مَنwhoever يتأَمّلُcontemplates الدّهراTime
A spectacle whose custom Time has renewed;
Words whispered imperceptibly
whoever reflects upon Time is bewildered.

And the sons of hope—at every turn,
Messengers after messengers arriving
you see a vast army of them.
Like drops, one follows the next,

And the turbaned men are at their stations,
And those with pale faces who on the day
while the Turks look toward them sidelong,
Of peace made their brows dusty,

And the cries of the wronged tell
patches of gardens crowned with blossoms.

And you see their two ranks as they stand,
They raised cases on their staffs
like a line whose arrangement parallels another line.
And implore God to resolve them,

And the king is like the sun, overwhelming
They approach and the cavalry cuts them off
our eyes before it utterly.

And of the armies surrounding him,
As if angry without anger
you see green billows all around him.
Lashing bellies and backs,

So great is the pressure of their close-packed ranks,
The horses coming and going,
you cannot discern a handspan of earth.
These led, those running,

وقَفواthey stood أمامَbefore سريرِهhis throne صُغراhumbled
And you see the kings of the earth subdued,
Under the little colts’ grooming
standing humbled before his throne.
Not disobeying any order,

Speech is a whisper with no audible sound,
With the elephant at the end of the procession,
and the eye steals its glance in secret.
Frightening the young man with its enormity,
والرُّسْلُand messengers بعدَafter الرُّسْلِmessengers واردةٌarriving

كالقَطْرِlike raindrops أصبحَhas come to يَتبَعُfollow القَطراraindrops

And messengers arrive after messengers,
like raindrops following raindrops.
Standing where the eunuchs command and forbid

And the fair-faced men are those who made
So it obeys the prohibition and command,
their foreheads dusty on the day of salutation.
Two ears like two shields beneath them,

And the clamoring of those seeking redress resembles
And two tusks like two spears if provoked,
the clamor of sandgrouse you have loudly driven off.
A pavilion rises over its platform

They raised petitions upon their reeds,
Shading it like one who climbed a palace,
imploring God that they be read.
Its trunk seems to be

حَرِدٌangry يَجُرُّdragging سِياطَهhis whips جَرّاalong
They draw near, while the marshal blocks their way,
The nozzle of a hose if flexed,
angry, dragging his whips along.
And the trumpets buzz if the Sultan rides
وكأنّهand as though he حَنِقٌenraged بلاwithout حَنَقٍrage

And he seems enraged, yet without rage,
You would think them vowing through him,
bringing his whips down on belly and back.
My Master, I fled to him from my time

And the horses come and go:
And the brother of disgrace, to him who fled,
this one is led, and that one is galloped.
So I will surely overlook those who spent

A lifetime, whether people knew or did not,
training, they disobey no command of theirs.
Why should I blame nights past

a bellow that fills a man with terror.

At the chamberlains' station it is commanded or
Or if it commanded us then it passed,
forbidden, and carries out prohibition and command.

Two ears like two shields, beneath them
From reproaching that era,
two tusks like two spears when it charges.

Its mahout mounts it, short as he is,
So I will surely forgive its sins completely,
and becomes like someone who has climbed a palace.

A master to whom I fled from my age;
So the dew healed their burning livers,
whoever flees to him is a brother of glory.
I presented them skinny, may he generously

I dwelt beside him and attained every wish;
From fear of Your power clinging to Chosroes,
for that reason they said, 'Dwell beside the sea.'

ingratitude surpasses unbelief.

While I knew the essence of their matter,
he never stitches a lid's edge shut with their lashes.
So until when will greed lead me

to be sharpened from their ribs in anger.
And old age bared its eye in wonder
