فديتُكَ رابني الإعراضُ عنّي

فديتُكَ رابني الإعراضُ عنّي

وذلك قد يَريبُ من الكَريمِ

وذلك قد يَريبُ من الكَريمِ

May I be your ransom! Your turning away from me troubled me.

I ransomed you, but estrangement from me was ordained

And that, from a generous man, may well cause misgivings.

And that may cast doubt on one noble

ولم أعرِفْ له سبباً لعَمْري

ولم أعرِفْ له سبباً لعَمْري

سوى الإضجارِ بالنّظْمِ السّقيم

سوى الإضجارِ بالنّظْمِ السّقيم

And, by my life, I knew no reason for it

And I never knew a reason for it, by my life

except the annoyance caused by feeble verse.

Other than tedium with insipid verse

وقد طوَّلْتُ في الأبياتِ جِدّاً

وقد طوَّلْتُ في الأبياتِ جِدّاً

وإنْ أَدلَلْتُ بالوُدِّ القديم

وإنْ أَدلَلْتُ بالوُدِّ القديم

And I have indeed made the verses very long,

And I have made the lines overly long

though I presumed upon our longstanding affection.

Even if I have shown familiar affection of old

فلا تَسمَحْ بما أنا مُستحِقٌّ

فلا تَسمَحْ بما أنا مُستحِقٌّ

ولا يكُ قَدُّ سَيْري من أديمي

ولا يكُ قَدُّ سَيْري من أديمي

So do not give me what I deserve,

So do not tolerate what I deserve

nor let my strap be cut from my own hide.

Nor let the span of my journey be from my hide

فليس جوابَ تطويلٍ عظيمٍ

فليس جوابَ تطويلٍ عظيمٍ

سوى استعمالِ تقصيرٍ عظيم

سوى استعمالِ تقصيرٍ عظيم

For there is no answer to great prolixity

For there is no response to lengthy prolongation

but the use of great brevity.
