كالغيثِlike the rain لكنْbut ذاكthat one منfrom أمواهِهits waters
يُروَىthirst is quenched الخليفةُthe caliph وهْوwhile he منfrom أموالهhis wealth
Like rain—but that one, with its waters,
quenches thirst; the caliph does so with his wealth.
أَقسمتُI swear ماnot للسَّيفِfor the sword يومَon the day of جِلادِهhis combat
كمَضائهlike his keenness فيin الحَقِّthe truth يومَon the day of جِدالهhis debate
I swear, the sword on the day of his combat
has no keenness like his in defending truth on the day of debate.
وسِجالُهand his brimming buckets سُحْبُclouds of النَّدىbounty وعَطاؤهand his giving
كالوَدْقِlike rain يَخْرُجُissues forth منfrom خِلالِamid خِلالهhis virtues
And his brimming buckets are clouds of bounty, and his giving
is like rain issuing from amid his virtues.
