Is this how the moon travels by night?

    And the night's forelocks are black;

it has not cleared away its gathered murk,

nor have the people seen a trace.

No, rather, it was a dream-phantom passing,

    veiled, without uncovering its face

    to leave the night radiant

and soothe the eye with a look.

O visitor who was never visited,

    who disguised stinginess as bashfulness,

and had not joined before forsaking:

    departure from water preceded arrival.

It was a shadow, then receded,

    save remnants of memories

that line an eye with sleeplessness as kohl.

So I rose, and my tears were pearls,

    restraining those that sprang forth,

and hiding the news from my companions.

And before us lay a trackless expanse,

whose night, when it falls into want,

sniffs the breaths of tawny gazelles.

Toward a mount of strong, lean flanks,

among the riding camels held in reserve,

    I was granted it as a prize of victory;

in it, high spirits joined noble breeding.

It grazed in the uplands of Dhu ʿUthar,

    among meadows and pools,

in valleys dark-green in their hollows,

    with patterns like variegated cloth,

when the flowers first released their fragrance.

So it waded through them at risk,

among reeds in a tangled thicket,

taking some herbage and leaving some,

with the swift females in green pastures,

away from waters with a chill in them.

    Until it came, already high-spirited,

filling the eyes of whoever looked.

    It held excellence over the pale camels;

others fell far behind it in the run,

after vying to follow its trail.

For if they grew lively and it slackened,

    amid clearness and murk,

it was like an alif within a written line.

Then it sped like a gazelle that bolts,

or no—like a torrent pouring downhill,

    or no—like a star falling,

or no—like a thought flashing by,

at the stroke of a whip of plaited strands,

its flank swerving away from it.

Until, when the camel-driver cried aloud,

and the journey grew long for the riders,

and leanness made the girth-strap shift,

    and breathlessness bowed the spirit,

it folded the lands up and spread them out,

until, after a long interval, we arrived by night

at a thronged courtyard of glory,

    before a mighty sovereign.

    His generosity flows among humankind

like the flow of decree and destiny.

Lofty in eminence, high upon thrones,

few his camel nose-rings, many his cooking pots:

    if Time bereaves, he avenges;

    أو جمَدَ النَّوءُ مَطَر

    or if a bone is broken, he sets it;

    or if the rain-star freezes, he rains;

or if the horses grow restless, he stays steady.

When he saw the calamity, he came to face it,

    and hardship began to gape,

    he strove patiently and endured,

with but a few who lent their aid,

until he bent the bright swords into shards,

and severed heads and scattered them,

and sent the cavalry out in companies,

    scowling, with white blazes,

    while they scattered the treacherous,

    steadfast beneath steadfast riders,

    burning, when battle's terror flared,

in a fire whose sparks were arrows.

    A bright, renowned day

    joined, for the radiant king,

    the desired aim and victory.

O his sword when he prevails,

and his succor when he seeks refuge,

and his glory when he boasts:

you are the minister and the refuge,

and all besides you are despised.

And can there be a rival in eminence—

a predawn star to the midmorning sun?

What ails the enemy—may he never be aided!—

that he resists a matter already decreed,

like a gambler insisting after a loss?

Ruin to him if he persists,

and no 'Rise again!' when he stumbles.

Command Time, and it will obey,

and do not squander its choice occasions.

    فلو وخَزْتَ بالإبَر

    And you are blessed and victorious;

so if you were to prick with needles,

they would become spears at the frontiers.

So strike the treacherous folk with them,

    for they draw out rancor

from every breast inflamed with spite.

O you who can achieve whenever you wish,

and who hasten whenever you give,

    even when asked, you apologize,

even when you give more, you offer thanks.

    Generosity, however abundant,

even if its least gift is purses of money,

does not leave a noble remembrance,

    unless, when it pours forth,

its finest share goes to one who makes poetry

and dives into it with thought,

while its lesser share is a prize

set out for everyone who attends.

    showering everyone with rain,

    مُؤيَّدُ المُلْكِ وَزَر

    yet favoring some with pearls?

    Mu'ayyad al-Mulk is a refuge;

all that goes beyond this is idle talk.

Of the deceptions wrought by Time,

for they proved equal when tested.

O you who, when a stallion bellows,

    from Yemen or from Mudar,

excepting the Prophet and his kin,

come forward, never walking under cover,

so the boast of those who boast grows lofty,

and you please those who know you

    in temperament, soul, and retinue.

May life delight you as long as you wish,

and may you endure as long as the string sings,

and attain your desire in glory.

You made a kingdom fast, and it was purified

from amid the entrails of changing fortune,

through the earnest work of bright blades and brown spears.

    So be firm of endurance,

if thoughts come there by night.

Passages of my verse suffice you,

drawn from every freshly invented meaning,

    in each concise verse,

    as though, in its measure,

it were a joyous day from a lifetime,

    in beauty, sweetness, and brevity.
