With a band of Mudharis, but all walking steadily
had made every Yemeni blade obedient to their right hands,
On the path of faith without straying right or left

A detachment that pulverizes rock underneath it
outdazzling the sun's radiance with its flashes,
Rushing to meet the sunset with lightning bolts

Where nothing incites the confusion of mayhem

The horses, like eagles, plunge into battle,
The horses plunge into danger like eagles
and the warriors are beneath the eagles' leading feathers.
As the warriors dash underneath the eagles

Spear-thrusts dig wells in kidneys, for which
Spears goring the kidneys straight through to the heart
brown spear-shafts serve instead of well-ropes.
With their slim iron heads instead of spear wood

On the horses' backs, provisions that make every kind
each a lavish host, a relentless spearman.
Of dewdrops their delightful share

Each son of a noble mare, his horse's chest
meets the point of every spear in battle.
Overflowing with valor beyond any adversary

Never fed his horse's milk, had he not been
had he not suckled a chaste woman's milk.
Fed himself the milk of his mare

By your perfect rule, the opinion of the minister
the minister's counsel and the sultan's banner,
And the banner of the Sultan grow brighter

whose forebears were the ornaments of the ages.

With features that captivate all who behold them
his house has firm pillars for visitors.

Your outstanding qualities have made you excel
a height the two Eagles fall short of reaching.
Beyond eagles, whom no other birds surpass

When you consider your descendants no lineage can equal
anyone nearing or matching his glory.
The glory of yours or even draw near

has upheld the eminence of the sons of Shayban.
You are supported by the towering heights of Bani Shayban

If you ask about superiority and highest virtue
they belong to the first of his two Qasims and the second.
Then the first to come to mind are the two Qasims

Those two, in their two earlier ages,
They were the two who in former times
raised the beacon of glory and the divan.
Raised the banner of glory and leadership

Glory has ten shares, if you divide it,
Divide excellence into ten parts: they would be
and the two Qasims are its two arrows.
Entitled to fully two of the shares

Was there anyone among ministers but Qasim?
The truth may indeed be given fuller explanation:
More could be said to make his superiority plain

All others who lived before him are gone

He gives lasting gifts, though he has passed away,
He gives everlasting gifts though he himself is gone
while the bounty of everyone besides him perishes.
While all others who outlived him perished

They are like your two arms, as though
to promise mankind your glory.
They bolstered your glory for all people

And you are the best that comes between them
the two ends are men like those.
If none resemble those two personages

in generosity, the promise of a pouring rain-cloud.
Our eyes with imaginary beauty marks

Summoning him with the costliest goods

anything for pride like beneficence and knowledge.
What any youth could collect of honor and respect

It is as if the swaying branches tremble for his arrival
for grave affairs by the tips of approaching spears.
Branches that bend toward each other with welcome

Loyally obedient, steadfastly compliant

I ransom you with my soul, O excellent Muhammad
whose hopeful petitioner is not flung to the two brinks.
Whose hopes do not disappoint hopes

and attends to it, neither faltering nor delaying.
Defying hesitation, refusal, or delay

all glory is but part of what he granted me.

I celebrated him in verse, but I refrain
to lodge excellence in a house of abasement.
From reducing his merit to nothingness

My pen flows and tongue keeps praising
