منَحتُكَI have given you فاشكَرْهاso be grateful for it مقالةَcounsel ناصحٍa sincere adviser
كماas شكَرتْgave thanks for ثِقْلَthe weight of الشُنوفِthe earrings المَسامعُthe ears
I have given you an adviser's counsel; be grateful for it,
A sincere friend's advice is a gift, so thank it
as ears give thanks for the weight of earrings.
As the ears thanked the weight of the heavy roof beams
تَناسَput out of mind الأسَىgrief وامسَحْand stroke علىover القلبِthe heart مَسحةًa stroke
كماas انقادَyielded مَزْموماًbridled إلىto الصَّبرِpatience جازعa distraught man
Put grief out of mind, and give the heart a gentle stroke,
Forget your sorrows and gently wipe your heart
as a distraught man yielded, bridled, to patience.
As the resigned one submitted to patience like a prisoner in shackles
فلاfor no غابِرٌremnant فيin الدَّهْرِtime يَرجوهُhopes for it آملٌa hopeful person
ولاnor غُبَّرٌresidual milk فيin الخِلْفِthe teat يَمْريهِmilks it طامعa covetous person
For nothing remains in time for the hopeful to hope for,
No gloomy days in life that a hopeful awaits
nor milk left in the teat for the covetous to draw.
Nor dusty trails in the future that a greedy one desires
نظَرْناwe looked ومِلْءُand filling الجَوِّthe sky والأرضand the earth ليلةًone night
نجومٌstars وأصبَحْناand we reached morning وكُلٌّand all بَلاقعbarren wastes
One night we looked, and the sky and earth were filled
We looked and the sky and earth were filled with darkness in the night
with stars; we awoke, and all was desolate.
With stars, but when morning came, all disappeared
ولكنّهاbut they غابَتْvanished ليومٍfor a day وعاودَتْand returned
وغابواand they vanished وماand not فيهمamong them إلىuntil الحَشْرِthe Resurrection راجعone returning
But the stars vanished for a day and returned,
Yet they're gone but for a day and then return
while those men vanished, none returning until the Resurrection.
While those people are gone never to come back till the Resurrection
فبتُّso I spent the night أُراعيهاI watch them وأندُبُand I mourn معشَراًa company of men
شَأْوهاthey outstripped them إلىtoward العُلْياthe heights وهُنَّwhile they طَوالعrising
So I spent the night watching the stars and mourning a company
So I weep for their loss and mourn a group
who outstripped them toward the heights while the stars were rising.
Whose ascent was lofty but now they've set
يُقلّبْنَthey turn تقليبَthe turning of الأرانبِrabbits أَعيُناًeyes
مُفتَّحةَheld open الأجفانِthe eyelids وهْيwhile they هَواجعasleep
They turn their eyes as rabbits do,
With eyes wide open like frightened rabbits
their eyelids open while they slumber.
Their eyelids fluttering, once vivacious, now dejected
لَقِيتُI faced صُروفَthe vicissitudes of الدَّهْرِtime وهْيwhile they تَنوشُنيthey assail me
I trade spear-thrusts with them والقلبُand the heart بالصّبرِin patience دارعarmored
I faced time's vicissitudes as they assailed me,
I've met the turns of fate as it gives me to drink
I trade spear-thrusts with them, my heart armored in patience.
I parry its strokes, my heart fortified with patience
وأَستَجلِبُand I draw الأقلامَthe pens رِزْقيmy livelihood وغَيرُهاand things other than them
إلىto الرّزْقِlivelihood لوif أيقظْتُI awakened عَزْميmy resolve ذرائعmeans
And I draw my livelihood from pens, though other things
I summon my pen for my provision and more
are means to livelihood, if I were to rouse my resolve.
To gain livelihood, if I awaken means thereto
جرَتْthey ran وأعاليهاwhile their upper ends أسافِلُlower ends خِلْفةًin reverse
فلاso may not خالفَتْهاforsake them منof كريمٍa generous man أَصابعfingers
They ran inverted, their upper ends turned downward;
Events ran their course, and their heights became low in succession
so may no generous man's fingers ever forsake them.
None of the noble has opposed their fingers
ألاah هلis there إلىto نَيْلِattaining الغنىwealth منany وسيلةmeans
يَمُتُّone seeks access بهاthrough it إلاّexcept السُّيوفُthe swords القَواطعkeen-edged
Ah, is there any means of attaining wealth
Is there any way to attain wealth
one may invoke, other than keen-edged swords?
Except by the cutting blades of sharp swords?
شُموسٌsuns تَهاوَىplunge فيinto رؤوسٍheads فَيعْتليso rises
لهاfor them شَفَقٌa twilight glow منfrom حيثُwhere تَغرُبُthey set طالعrising
Suns that plunge into heads, so there ascends
Suns set in heads, so dusk rises for them
for them a twilight glow, rising from where they set.
Where their sun had set in the west
فحَتّامَso until when أَكسوI clothe الباخلينَthe misers قلائداًnecklaces
وفوقَand upon أَكُفِّthe hands اللُّؤْمِof baseness منهمْof theirs جَوامعshackles
How long, then, shall I adorn misers with necklaces,
So I adorn the misers with necklaces
while shackles lie upon their ignoble hands?
And above the palms of the wretched, grand mosques
وماand not الدُّرُّpearls فيin مُستودَعِthe repository of البحرِthe sea ضائعاًwasted
ولكنّهbut they فيin أَخمَصِthe hollow of the sole الوَغْدِof the scoundrel ضائعwasted
And pearls are not wasted in the sea's keeping,
The pearls are not lost in the sea's treasury
but they are wasted in the hollow of a scoundrel's sole.
But lost in the possession of the despicable
مَدائحُpraise-poems أمثالُlike الرُّقَىincantations نَفَثاتُهاtheir breathed utterances
لتُكفَىso as to be spared الأذاياharms لاnot لِتُسْدَىso as to be bestowed الصّنائعfavors
Praise-poems whose breathed words resemble incantations,
Praise poems are like refined mannerisms
for harms to be averted, not for favors to be bestowed;
Meant to prevent uncouthness, not to hinder crafts
وقَرْعٌand knocking لأبوابat the doors of اللّئامِthe ignoble تَعِلَّةًas a diversion
ومُضطَربُand the room to roam الأحرارِof free men فيin الأرضِthe earth واسعample
and knocking at the doors of the ignoble as a mere diversion,
Knocking at the doors of the vile is a pretext
while free men have ample room to roam the earth.
While the noble on earth have vast open spaces
ألاah قاتلَmay confound اللهُGod المطامعَcovetous desires إنّماit is only
Ah, may God confound greed! It is only
May God destroy greed which only
greed that debases proud souls.
Degrades the dignified souls, does greed
سأُظهِرُI shall make plain أقصَىthe utmost اليأسَdespair منهمْof them نَزاهةًout of self-respect
وأرضَىand I am content بأدْنىwith the least العَيشِsustenance والحُرُّand the free man قانعcontent
I shall make plain my utter despair of them, out of self-respect,
I will show utmost despair in them with honesty
and be content with the humblest living; a free man is content.
And be content with the lowest living, for the free is satisfied
وأَدفَعُand I drive away عنّيfrom me طارِقَthe night-visitor of الهمِّcare بالمُنَىwith hopes
وأَنظُرُand I watch هذاthis الدَّهرَage ماwhat هوit صانعwill do
And I drive care's night-visitor away from me with hopes,
I will ward off the visiting sorrows with hopes
and watch this age to see what it will do.
And see what this life will do
