I felt dread at the embers blazing in your cheek,
I feared the glowing embers on your cheek would burn
fearing for the bright white hailstones in your mouth.
The brilliant pearl that is your smiling lips

So I took away this one's heat with my ribs,
So I extinguished its heat with my ribs
and protected that one from melting with my tears.
And protected its melting with my tears

And I was content, since your beauties remained unharmed,
I was content when your beauty was unharmed
ransomed by my tears and ribs.
Ransomed by my tears and ribs

I have not forgotten my encounter with you, O Zaward, that morning
I do not forget our love in the morn
we visited you before the companions' grievous departure.
We'd visit before the first light spreads

And the eyes of your gazelle 'neath the veils

Until farewell's hour came between us
lay a secret not divulged to the talebearers.
A secret to the spies, not common knowledge

There was nothing but a motion of eyebrows
It was naught but duty's bidding
in our greeting, and a gesture of fingers.
Our acquiescence and gesturing fingers

On the morning of the day at the valley bend, a steadfast man turned
And the morn after the day of sorrow
an eye, revealing the inner feelings of one distraught.
The patient one glanced round, expressing the grief of torn hearts

The encampment's full moons appeared on the horizon of departure,
In the horizon dawned the blossoms of the beloved
radiant, setting though they seemed to rise,
Flowers appeared though stars still shone

How much sweeter, then, is departure when it grants
Provisioning your eye where halt was denied
provisions for your eye, than a stay that withholds them!

The deadly assaults of archer-eyes are wondrous;
Witness their actions with a shielded heart
so witness their battles with an armored heart.

and the kings of a land, when I loathed dwelling near them
Were unjust, I showed no humility
for their tyranny, without showing a submissive face—
And when a member corrupts, it becomes useless

nothing cures it but the hand that cuts it off—

For the terrified, O wise one, listen to the humble
a submissive ear to an intimidator, my friend:
"Make your enemy withdraw, who but you

does not placate his enemies?

for I have seen nothing like the dignity of the contented.

of time, whose rents mock the patcher.

no hand shall touch my mount's saddle to take it down.

From the dreamer tossing in his bed?"
and stitched shut those of a carefree sleeper!

beneath its wing, and the blade as my bedfellow,
"Cities always gesture me welcome

of fleet she-camels striding across the wilderness.

like a star between settings and risings.

the one extolling you—and an earring for the listener's ear.
"Bestowed without cease are your charitable deeds

and people within them are like cooing doves.

from the Glory of God's Faith, favor upon favor.

As for the vizierate, it had remained a spinster,
Was cut, blood flowing, no trickster's guile,"
seeking a worthy match who united noble distinctions.
"Suitor's noses cut until a proud horse rose

That wouldn't yield to any challenger,"
with blood, yet never duped by a deceiver's trick!
"They appealed but she refused while you refused

a stallion appeared who would submit to no restrainer.

It offers wondrous innovations,"
until she came to you with her most honored intercessor.

for a day, it brings marvels from its bounty.

Leave the wilderness to Abu Ali, for eminence
Known by all for renowned mention,"
is his right, to the exclusion of every rival.
"After them came your great wealth

With him the viziers received a final seal of majesty—
As the troops' vanguard deployed,"
all predecessors of widespread renown.

just as scouts are sent ahead of the army.

a rising full moon has appeared above their mountain pass.

are delights pleasing to the eye and ear.
