وأطلُبُهاand I seek her منfrom ناظرِيmy eye وهيwhile she فييin القلبِthe heart
وأطلُبُها من ناظرِي وهي فيي القلبِ
I ask the caravan about her, though she is with the caravan.
I ask the caravan about her while she is with the caravan
And I seek her through my eye, though she is in my heart.
And I seek her from my onlookers while she is in my heart
وماand it is not عادةُthe custom of الأيّامthe days إنif رُحْتُI go عاتباًreproaching

And it is not the days' custom, when I go reproaching
It is not the way of days when I complain to them
them, to grant appeasement in answer to my reproach.
That they direct my reproach to my reproach

فلاso neither أَرَبىmy desire فيin الحُبِّlove أقضِيI fulfill ولاnor نَحْبيmy life's term
فلا أَرَبى في الحُبِّ أقضِي ولا نَحْبي
My heart hangs between estrangement and union,
My love is suspended between estrangement and union
so I neither satisfy my desire in love nor meet my end.
So I achieve neither in love nor do I rest
وماand not غَرَّنيbeguiled me داعيthe summons of الهوىpassion غيرَexcept أنّنيthat I

نظَرْتُ فأصباني بعَينَيْه مَنْ يُصْبي
Love's summons beguiled me only because I
Nothing enticed me to the call of passion except that
looked, and he who enchants made me lovesick with his eyes.
I looked, and the one who pines struck me with his eyes

ودونَ سُراهُ نَبْوةُ الجَفْنِ والجَنْب
I long for the loved ones' phantom, traveling by night,
I yearn for the phantom of the loved ones passing by
but the unrest of eyelid and side bars its nightly journey.
While revelation of the eyelid and side are their images
فماso what is wrong للنّوىwith separation لاnot يَعْتريafflicts غيرَanyone except مُغْرَمٍa lover

كأنّas though النّوىseparation صَبٌenamored منَamong النّاسِpeople بالصَبَwith the lovesick lover
كأنّ النّوى صَبٌ منَ النّاسِ بالصَبَ
Why does separation afflict none but a lover?
So what ails the resolution if none but the enamored feels it
As though separation were in love with the lovesick, of all people.
As if resolution is a torrent flooding people away

Whenever we are close in affection, Time sows discord between us,
When we reconciled, time worked against us
and reunion becomes difficult, just short of impossible.
And meeting became impossible, arduous

By God, a dwelling bereft of Umaymah,
By God, a quarter of Umm Umaymah lies barren
the dews deck it with moist pearls.
Adorned by the winds with moist pearls

There I made a halt serve as the riding camels' tether;
I made it a halt for the riding camels
if the tribe's dwelling wished, it lasted long for my companions.
If the tribe desires, it lingers long with my friends

بسافِحةِ الإنسانِ سافحةِ الغَرْب
In yearning I showered the face of their abode
I shot its dwellings from afar out of longing
with an eye whose pupil streamed, whose tears flowed in torrents.
With the plains of mankind, plains of the west

With it I water my cheek, though my burning thirst lies in my heart.
I quench my cheek with it, though anguish fills my heart
And rain may bypass the places of drought.
Sometimes rain transcends the places of drought

And, O friend, join my lament at Malik's sandy tract,
And oh friend, make me happy with a drink of Malik
even if Samra has settled with the clan of Ka'b.
Even if it is poured in the tribe from a leather bucket

And go on; let us console ourselves with talk of love,
And walk slowly, complaining of passion
and ascribe love's traces to our loved ones.
And lean on our loved ones, the vestiges of love

And do not marvel that I have lived on after them:
Be not amazed that I lived after they left
for they are my soul, and they have settled in my heart.
For they are my soul and they have settled in my heart

And many a wasteland's breadth the pale camels crossed, bearing the delegation,
With rents Al-'Is tore its mantle
and found Najd off to the side of their slanting shoulders.
And two thousand, Najd turned away from its mounts

And we, at the foot of the two hills, away from the protected pasture,
While we are at the foot of the two eminences, protecting
veered onward, folding gray wastes away on gray mounts.
Flames, wrapping light upon light

On every lean camel that outstrips the gaze,
To each one whose sight is fading
as though its girth's course lay upon a sturdy wild ass;
As if the places of activity have shunned him

and a hardy she-camel crossing plains, hollows, and hills,
Letters roam the plains, valleys and dunes
like a grammatical particle, ever raising, drawing along, and setting upright.
Like letters with consistent declension

Noble she-camels strike sparks from pebbles every night,
She-camels strike the pebbles every night
as though their forelegs held lamps for the caravan.
As if their hands hold lanterns for the caravan

As if the stars of night stretched our path
were flung forth by the tawny Ghurayri camels' forelegs.
Reaching with them the hands of Ghurayyir, gray-haired

It was as though Shihab al-Din, when they bore us
As if the meteors of religion, when we traveled by them
to him—the mounts exchanging distance for nearness—
To it the steeds change remoteness into nearness

Bearing the great portion of the meteors

When the meteors of religion visit our mounts
tell, then, of the thirsty one's night journey to a sweet watering-place.
Then say, in the joyous journey, to the fresh sweet waters

and does the hopeful seeker seek anyone but a noble king?
Does the hopeful seek other than a generous king?

He twisted his stout cord tight against the vicissitudes of Time,
He makes the bitter taste of time pass
And the sword's mark reveals the excellence of the stroke.
And the trace of the sword expresses the perfection of striking

The outcomes of all he undertakes are where his gaze alights,
The consequences of what his glance brings about
so the marks he leaves endure longer than the blades.
Its traces more lasting than rod and staff

He rules the subjects with death and demise
and attacks his enemies with battalions and letters.
And invades the enemies with regiments and books

without them both, its sin would not be forgiven.
Without them, sins would not be forgiven

So may they always together rule the kingdom, not declining
on the grove's pulpit, the preacher among the dusky birds.
While the preacher declaims sermons from the pulpit

And its worst, if counted, are dust to dust
