لِمُشْبِهاتِك بالأجيادِ والمُقَلِ
At the valley bend you left the ruined dwelling you wore away
You remained steadfast though you were worn by the ruins,
to those resembling you in necks and eyes.
Resembling the generous horses and the slender gazelles.

وليس كُلُّ غزالٍ صِيغَ للغَزَل
The gazelles of Wajra replace the beautiful women there,
The young does replace hissān with wara’,
but not every gazelle was fashioned for love.
Yet not every gazelle is made for poetry.

معَ الغداة لعَيْنٍ أو معَ الأُصُل
How can the desert's wild creatures compare with her when she appears
Where is the shyness of the graceful fawn
before an eye at dawn or in the late afternoon?
When she meets an eye in the morning or evening?

Were the pale gazelle's neck adorned,
Had those with ruddy complexions been present
it would not match the beauty's unadorned neck.
The tales of the fair one would not be told during leisure.

Nor would the oryx resemble her, even kohled,
The wild cow has no resemblance when it is adorned
even if its pale-lidded eye were satisfied with kohl.
If only its squinting eye were content with kohl.

How many free-flowing tears overflowed that morning,
How many submissive tears overflowed back then
traveling alongside the docile she-camels they urged onward!
Accompanying what cheerful people composed of gentle songs.

And souls whose finest treasures were precious to us
And noble souls whose virtues we cherished
would not have flowed away had their camel-litters not departed at dawn.
If their morning drinking had not continued.

I would ransom her who departed from us in anger;
I ransom her who angrily left us,
my passion said to my heart, 'Depart in her wake.'
So my passion said to my heart: “Set out after her!”

I was happy to follow the tribe’s traveling,
a strong horse like lightning, with flowing locks of mane.
Carried by a soft-flanked horse, swift as lightning.

It gallops with a lovesick rider who has cast aside fear,
It attacks the fearful with its sword,
girded with a sword, holding his spear under his arm.
Wearing armor and grasping the spear.

When I reached the first of the caravan traveling
I grasped the loose end of the hurrying rider's rein,
I took hold of the lead rope of the speeding rider,

trying to turn her back, while the horses stood across my path
Trying to turn her back though the horse refused,
and slender brown spear-shafts rose between their ears.
With the bells ringing between its ears.

Until, when she drew near, within a hand's reach
Until when she drew near enough for my hand to reach
if a lover stretched it out—though unapproachable and unattained—
Even if it stretched out it could not attain her.

She said—while the steeds of passion robbed me of patience—
and the sun of her bright brow lay in twilight's grasp:
“And the sun of her anger in the grip of the child:

When I have set in a sunset the color of wounds?

Before I could tug her braided rein that day, how many
How many, short of pulling the forelock, that day
horsemen lay fallen from their horses' backs!
Thrust with their spears at the flanks of the horses!

I lodged my spearhead in him where
I sheathed my spear when love for her overcame me,
passion had lodged in me, and neither heart escaped.
And both our hearts became insensible to reason.

I said, 'Take death in battle at a champion's hand,
I said: ‘Meet your death in battle by a hero
in exchange for a like death in love at a champion's hand.'
Who will meet his like in love from a hero!’

Today my reason has returned, and I am supported
Today my heart has turned me back and chided me,
by my companions; my reprovers have ceased their blame.
My friends blamed me, and the censurers fell short of censure.

I fastened patience over my breast, double-layered,
I have doubled my endurance upon my chest,
and care nothing for the volleys of wide eyes.
And I do not care about the gaze of spies.

With David’s coat of mail my heart is armored—
if your glance has become one of the sons of Thu'al.
If your glance has become one of the clan of Thu’al.

Leave my heart that you have long tortured
to busy itself henceforth with glory rather than longing.
To seek glory instead of passion!”

O thirsty man, who has filled his entrails, through thirst,
O rider, fill the entrails with thirst
with fire, while the horizons are empty of moisture,
Like fire, though the horizons are devoid of rain!

leave aside the unavailing right and left;
Leave right and left—they are futile—
head straight before you and seek the ultimate end of the paths.
And go straight ahead, seeking the end of the roads.

Know, when I say, 'Bring your pale camels to a sea of bounty,'
Know that when I say “Turn the caravan back,”
that I have directed you to none but Izz al-Din.
I swear it is not by the glory of religion.

The sea has many names, and its best known,
The sea has many names, but best known
in the language of the hopeful, is Ali's hand.
By convention among the hopeful is “the hand of Ali.”

In each of its fingertips, when sought for bounty,
In each of its handfuls, when it flows
flow copious seas of generosity for the petitioner.
Seas of dew flow for the desirous, dripping.

A single drop from it would slake mankind's thirst,
A single drop of it would water all people
yet its overflowing bounty never ceases throughout time.
If it flowed alone, but its abundance never ceases.

Whoever desires to see perfection embodied—tell
Let him who wishes to look on the essence of perfection—
him, 'Anoint your eyes with the face of Kamal al-Dawla.'
Say to him: “With the cheek of the Dawla, adorn yourself!”

A radiant man through whom the sovereign of humankind towers
He is the most clement, noblest sultan of mankind;
over the kingdoms like a cloud pouring rain.
By him kingdoms are exalted like pouring rain.

If he travels and thereby marks the world with honor,
that revive the earth, on plain and mountain.
He brings life thereby to the land, plain and mountain.

With them he guards his glory against a grasping hand,
He protects his glory thereby from usurping hands
and his sovereign's wealth against an embezzler's hand.
And his rule from hands that would diminish it.

Whenever he considers affairs, he defeats every officeholder's attempt
However much one who undertakes work observes,
to conceal his conduct, and revives every man of hope.
He cannot conceal a condition or give hope to the hopeless.

May God guard you, you who, as an act of honor, have sheltered
Thus the succession of days turned away from one prudent,
His servants with bounty continuous as rainfall.
By whose opinion the world was cured of sickness.

An overseer, lavish in generosity, whom you see
And we came to have a state whose triumphs
become, with shin and sin, the supreme example.
In his hands became the most perfect of realms.

at the disorder I saw in people's affairs:
His pens beyond it sharper than swords.

Are always open to the people, like a kiss.

One who examines his dignified aspect will see
and a task there without a man!
A towering mountain moving like a drawn sword.

If he settles, the earth teems with encampments.

Until the turns of days revealed a discerning man,
Courageous, on a marked, he seems
whose judgment cured the world of its ailments.
To beholders Saturn in the sign of Gemini.

He came to us, as though evil had never had
He has a cowl, fine clothes, a clear complexion,
its causes created, and goodness had never ceased.
From which five torches hang on their edges.

His far-reaching ambition was not satisfied just now
It is as though he is water of the dawn:
by straightening his age from that crookedness,
When he performed ablution, he did not rinse completely.

until his soul insisted upon exacting an accounting
None before has seen the sun rise over his horsemen
for the wrongs Time had done in its earliest days.
Or the full moon passing through Saturn!

And a state came to enjoy increased blessings
By God, the back of his palm is too glorious—
through meeting him; through him it is among the most perfect states.
Its least generosity shows you the sea as insignificant!

A solicitous man governs it, unfaltering in his resolutions;
It is a tear that if you seek its favors
his pens, in their pursuit, are sharper than spears.
Gives you more than wishes, then says: “Ask!”

Fortune favors him; his gifts are eagerly hoped for;
I am amazed by a pen in the hand of one so generous
his doors forever draw people like prayer's focal points.
Lavishly spending in munificence, busy with thought.

Dignity is manifest in him; whoever studies him sees
It shot the arrows of my needs without mistake
a mountain, yet he cuts through heads with a sword's keenness.
When it inscribed a parchment without error.

He seems the revolving celestial sphere when seen,
It raced in that field writing me
sheltering mankind, swift yet unhurried.
What, stored afterward in memory, cannot be surpassed.

When he rides with the horses, the air chokes with their trotting
It did not dictate to my mouth upon its hand,
dust; when he alights, the earth chokes with retainers.
Rather, its generosity dictated to my hopes!

Indeed you were greeted by one whose resolve
to those who gaze, and shod with Orion.
Did what my tongue afterward did not express.

With a blaze and bright white stockings, there cling
Your kindness revealed the time’s shortcoming—
at its extremities five flames from them.
In springtime, roses bloom from buds.

لمّا توضْأَ لم يُسْبِغْ على عَجَل
It is as though, using the water of dawn for itself,
A people we asked but who did not give, though able,
it performed ablution hastily and left it incomplete.
While the ransom of the generous gave without asking!

Before its rider, no one had ever seen
I have risen above those who did me wrong
a sun whose rising places towered over Saturn.
Until the fangs of youth retracted.

How wondrous he whose hand's back is kissed for his nobility!
How ignorant is he who was stubbornly opposed to me
His least bounty makes the sea seem a trickle.
Until I yielded, refusing to oppose him!

أعطاكَ فوقَ الأماني ثمّ قالَ سَل
A generous lord: if you come hoping for his favors,
You relieved my heart from anxiety in my defense
he gives beyond your wishes, then says, 'Ask.'
With proofs you presented to me and all who hear are in awe

I marveled at a pen in a generous man's hand,
Until you bestowed on me the honor of association,
pouring forth in generosity, occupied with judgment.
Achieving every desire—which have you not granted?

It shot and struck my targets without a miss,
You made me the trainbearer of the revered one,
when it adorned a sheet's surface without a foolish word.
While I would have been content with the outer hem!

It raced about that course, writing for me
The elite of the age were pleased altogether
what had not yet even crossed my inward thoughts.
By what you did to spite the lowly.

There was no dictation from my mouth to his hand;
So may the state of our Master the Minister endure for us!
rather, his generosity dictated to my hopes.
And may you remain in the shade of an unchanging rule!

Ah, may you be saluted, man of high resolve, whose
If you follow convention beginning with recognition,
fingers did what my tongue had not yet said!
You are not stingy after bestowal, never withholding.

Your kindness revealed Time's shortcomings: on
Power and wealth—if you alternate between them—
spring's cheek roses bloom from embarrassment.
Are like combining irrigation with keeping camels.

فِداءُ ذي كَرَمٍ أعْطَى ولم نَسَل
Those we asked, who gave nothing although they could,
They have come to you apportioned directly;
are a ransom for a generous man who gave unasked.
Their precedence is from a mindful of your love.

I have charmed Time, my ill-doer, with spells
When the generous man’s sympathy is repeated,
that blunted for me the points of its formidable fangs.
It inclines like the full one made to listen.

How often, in ignorance, it took sides against me, until
So take from me, thanking freely, an improviser
I overawed it, and it insisted on siding with me alone.
Who has said of a doer of good, himself improvising.

You cheered my heart before the chief with arguments
Listen! For that is unmatched praise,
you advanced for me; whoever hears of them can imagine.
And look! For that is unmatched loyalty—
حتّىuntil أَنلْتَنِيَyou obtained for me التَّشريفَthe robe of honor مُؤْتَنِفاًanew

Until you obtained for me a fresh robe of honor
With poetry a people take pride, yet he takes pride in me,
from him—and what gift have you failed to obtain?
If counted among my famous words or deeds.

وكنتُ أقنَعُ لو مُتِّعْتُ بالسَّمَل
You made me trail the hem of his fresh garment,
I swear that if not for meanings that require it,
when I would have been content to enjoy a worn rag.
My nature would not be inclined, nor my disposition.

ما قد صنَعْتَ على رَغْمٍ منَ السَّفِل
All the distinguished people of the age rejoiced
It does not please me that my thought should ever
at what you did, despite the displeasure of the lowly.
Be seen distracted from my deeds, having other concerns.

May the rule of our lord the vizier endure for us,
If they had permitted in days gone by, I had hopes—
and may you endure beneath a kingship that never passes.
Yet for the people tomorrow I am their hope!

If you add kindness to the recognition you began,
My perfections have urged me to depart with them,
you are not one to begrudge gift after gift.
And only the robe of reason remains.

Rank and wealth, if you join them together,
I have unfinished chapters left, so rise to them, O Ali,
are like combining a second draught with the first to quench thirst.
As you rose fully to the occasion!

It comes to you cooled by the north wind, its choicest wine unmixed,
In closeness or distance, consider the matter of a youth
from the hand of a mind wrapped in love for you.
Whose affairs rest on you alone, after God!

As for fasting, it is like an honored guest
the noble man's frame, like a drunken drinker's sway.
Whose time to depart for your abode has come.

Take, then, from a praise-poet improvising thanks,
So enjoy it traveling with blessings completed,
what he said of a noble man improvising kindness.
Returning in a thousand years afterward in prosperity!

Listen: that is praise that is not borrowed;
Count with your palms recurring holidays,
and look: this is loyalty that is not feigned.
When the howdahs of night distress the camels.

Some men boast of poetry, while poetry boasts of me,
Let my praise of you endure eternally—
whether counted among my famous sayings or my deeds.
If you heed it, it will have a life without end.

لم يَلتَفِتْ نحوَهُ طَبْعي ولم يَمِل
I swear: were it not for meanings unique to it,
Poetry audiences have snatched it up in rapture
my poetic nature would neither turn toward it nor incline.
When it is recounted, whether shortened or prolonged.

It never gladdens my eyes to see
Remembrance is the best provision for man, so take it
my thought absorbed in composing it, diverted from my deeds.
As a glorifier of you, not futile.

As I came to look toward the days, if they were generous,
Make your freely given honor a protection
with hope for myself, so people came to look toward me.
All time long for honor not freely given.

My camels moaned; urging them to depart were
my companions, with nothing left but to undo the hobbles.

I still have details of needs remaining; attend
to them, Ali, as you have attended to the whole.

And tend, near or far, to the affairs of a young man
whose reliance, after God, rests on you alone.

your shelter, whose swift departure is now at hand.

Rejoice in it as it departs, ending auspiciously,
and as it returns for a thousand years to come, in gladness.

With both hands count recurring festivals,
as long as camels' night cries stir longing in a traveling band.

Endure as long as my praise of you: it has,
if you care for it, a life with no appointed end.

when recited, whether I am brief or speak at length.

Renown is a man's finest stored treasure; go forth with it,
adorning for yourself a glory that is not bare.

Make your freely bestowed worldly wealth a shield
for all time for an honor never debased.
