As for the greeting of the kohl-dark gaze,
The greeting of the kohl-lined eye
on the evening my companions resolved to depart—
On the eve my companions departed

وبلَّتْand has moistened عَبْرتيmy tear إلاexcept غليليmy burning thirst
indeed, separation has severed all but my remembrance,
Has severed my sleep except for my memories
and my tear has moistened all but my burning thirst.
And my tears have flowed except for my torment

My tears water the exposed surface of my cheeks,
My tears water the cheeks of the meadows
yet turn aside from the blaze of anguish lodged within.
And cool the heat of an unsympathetic stranger

And what use is it to me, though downpours fall,
Of no use is the pouring rain
if they miss the places stricken by drought?
If it misses the places of my beloved
هُمُthey نَقَضُواbroke عهوديmy covenants يومَthe day بانواthey departed

They broke their pledges to me the day they departed,
They broke their vows the day they left
and showed the side of their fickle gaze.
Revealing cold glances and aloof eyes

They kept their pledge of desertion when they threatened me;
They reneged on reunion after promising it
and how often they promised union, yet failed to keep faith with me!
How often they promised union but did not fulfill it

And among the Hilali riders was a fawn,
In the crescent-shaped caravan were charming ones
who appeared on the day of farewell to the laden camels.
Who on the day of farewell cast me languishing glances

His enchanting gaze struck my heart—
That captivated my love-sick heart
and how can the keen be struck by the dull?
How can what is gone be swayed by a fading shadow?

You were miserly, though you enjoyed the purity of my love,
You were stingy though you had my sincere love
and among the torments is love for a miser.
But the miser's love is ever marred by stinginess

And I passed the night—had you summoned my phantom in sleep,
Had you conjured my phantom in your sleep
it would have drawn my very body to you, so wasted was I.
My person would have been dragged to you from afar

But there is no way to a cure
But no healing is possible
if the physician turns against the patient.
When the healer leans toward the ailing

And among what stirred my rapture was a phantom
Of what stirred joy in me were phantoms
that returned by night as darkness lowered its curtains.
As dusk fell, drawing down its veils

And my companions had made every lean she-camel kneel,
While my companions halted at the edges
each necklaced with loops of braided rein.
Of the wadi, tethering the camels' reins

A swift she-camel's foreleg is my pillow by night,
The arm of a beauty becomes my pillow
and a fleet mare's shade is my midday resting place.
And the shadow of a maiden my quilt

I take pride in my own glory
when the tribe's nobility does not suffice me.
If my tribe's honor does not suffice

And every gazelle possesses my heart's secret,
Every gazelle-eyed one owns my heart's secret
languid of glance, like a fawn apart from its herd.
Languid of glance like the unsettled dust

His first beard-down along both cheeks resembled
The down on his cheek narrates the start of separation
the trail of ants on a polished sword.
As ants creep on the polished sword

Onlookers bow down before it
when he uncovers his tilted cheek,
When it shows from the bend of his cheek

As kings regarded a missive
with Abd al-Jalil upon its heading.
With "Abdul Jalil" in the title

A sovereign whose bounty and justice embraced all,
A king whose kindness and justice spread
and so exalted above any rival or equal.
Above all match and parallel

His renown overshadowed the sons of the world,
He shaded the world's children gloriously
as daylight has no need of proof.
As daylight has no need for guide

He has a hand from which wealth slips away;
His palm scatters wealth from it
and how could water stay still in a watercourse?
How can water settle in a drain?

And pens that outstrip the points of lofty spears,
His pens surpass peaks of greatness
through prowess in encounters, not through length.
Not by length, but by steadfastness in crises

O minister of the two states, hear a hopeful man's plea
The prayer of the minister of two states
for his truthful words to be graciously received.
For acceptance of his words' honesty

You restored the order of this faith when
You reformed this religion's order when
its star edged toward the horizon of its setting.
Its star declined on the horizon of loss

And you fell upon the sons of heresy until
You were weary of atheist hordes until
you left their hosts as meat for the blades,
You left their throngs as barren wastelands

on a day when God's faith grew mighty
On a day when God's faith was mighty
and unbelief took the station of the abased.
And disbelief took the station of disgrace

You washed that land's skin clean of them
You washed the land's surface of them
with a pouring rain of their blood.
With a downpour of their blood

And on the day the armies of the East came, all together,
And when the East's armies came as flights
drawing up troop beside troop,
Of locusts swarming flock by flock

وقدand already زَحفواthey had advanced كإفْراطِlike the overflowing of السُّيولtorrents
you turned them back on their heels, humbled,
You drove them back in retreat
though they had advanced like overflowing torrents.
Though they crept like torrents rushing wild

So they fled in terror without looking back,
So they fled without looking back, terrified
mingling rugged ground with plains.
Winding through the plains in panic

Then, when you saw fear of your onslaught among them,
When you saw their fear seeping in
which had severed friend from friend,
Though the friend was cut off from friend

you showed the offenders compassion, though they had done wrong,
You pardoned the offenders though they did wrong
in the manner of a resolute, kind man who keeps bonds:
With the disposition of a kind, righteous man

Slow to anger when provoked
but never slow in fulfilling promises.
And no violator of promises

Sound in judgment: neither delay's lost opportunity
Sound in judgment, never hasty
befalls him, nor the rash man's misstep.
Or wavering at the fool's impulse

Pauses of forbearance mar his keen resolve,
You reject severity and acts of clemency alike
as notches mar Mashrafi swords.
Like the defects of a palace's towers

And we have never heard of one more generous by nature than he,
None we have heard of is nobler in nature
or farther from the deeds of the overbearing,
Or farther from the acts of the unjust

or more lavish in giving to a petitioner,
Most generous toward the apologetic
or more forgiving of the offense of one who seeks pardon.
Kindest toward the remorseful offender

But when the peoples broke their pledges,
So when the people broke their oath
refusing to be content with little,
Refusing to accept even the littlest

and stubbornly turned away from their own welfare,
Obstinately blocking their own deliverance
as a love-struck man shuns the reprover's counsel,
Like rain blocked by rugged hills

ضُحاهُits forenoon منbecause of العَجاجةِthe dust-cloud كالأصيلlike late afternoon
you brought upon them a day of battle
You summoned against them a day of might
whose forenoon, from the dust-cloud, resembled late afternoon.
Whose dawn erupted with bright flashes

وبُرْدُand the mantle of النّقْعِdust مَجْرورُtrailing الذُّيولthe hems
You unfurled the banners' tresses that day,
You unfurled the banners' plaits within it
while the mantle of dust trailed its hems.
And the swords slid swift from their sheaths
وثُرْتَand you surged إليهمُtoward them بالخَيْلِwith steeds شُعْثاًdisheveled

And you surged upon them with disheveled steeds,
You surged at them wildly on horseback
guided by horsemen steady in the saddle.
With horsemen charging unrestrained
ففَرَّقَso scattered جَمْعَهمْtheir gathering طَعْنٌthrusting دراكٌin quick succession

Successive thrusts scattered their gathering,
A piercing, fatal blow scattered their horde
and blows like the gaping jaws of camel stallions.
And a stroke like that of valiant warriors

And war receded, revealing the wretched among them:
The war stripped away from their midst
captive, wounded, or slain.
Captive, wounded, or dead

They seemed, as they lay struck down, like drunken men
As though they were erected idols
who had served one another aged wine.
Toppled from a lofty sanctuary

You were created, upheld by lofty fortune,
You were created, backed by glorious ancestry
guaranteeing the utmost of all you desire.
Achieving all that you desire, guaranteed

If an aggressor urges his steed toward you
When a rebel spurs his steed toward you
to make it gallop, it is shackled by its anklets.
To race it, it halts in stillness

If he puts a keen sword into his right hand,
When he hurls a sword in his right hand
it disobeys him and lodges in his own neck.
His staff becomes limp in his grip

Toward you I slipped myself out of the siege,
I slipped through the siege to reach you
as a lot-arrow leaves the shuffler's palm.
Like a star freed from the rainy night
فَجِئتُكso I came to you عاريَbare العِطفَيْنِboth sides أَسعَىI hasten

So I came running to you, bare on both sides,
I came bare-armed, hastening
to wear the mantle of your abundant bounty.
To wear your ample coat

You were the Kaaba of beneficence only
You were Mecca's house of kindness
to be the gathering place of guests who come to lodge.
So pilgrims throng to you in seasons

Bare when we reach you on pilgrimage
and we are clothed when he gives the signal to return.
Robed when you permit return

Fulfill my hopes and grant
my hands, for you are the one I petition and all I desire.
My hands victory, for you are my wish and solution
