وآثَرَ من بينِ الجوانحِ بُعْدَه
Ah, would that my heart, the day it declared its passion
O how I wish my heart had declared its passion
and chose to depart from between my ribs,
And chosen to wander far from all other affections

had been seen by the tribe's jealous guardian following their departing caravan,
The jealous blamed it and set their steeds to pursue it
who, fearing for them, charged it with horsemen and drove it back.
So it took fright and quickly returned to the wilderness

But how could he force the heart back into the breast
But how can a heart be forced back to the thickets
when it once flew away through a passion that had revived it?
If it has once taken wing out of passionate love?

How many a full moon in a howdah rides those pale camels!
Above that fount how many bright moons arise
When it shines for the night traveler, he sees error as his guidance.
Lighting the traveller's way if their radiance is veiled

And many a forelocked beauty—if a conqueror pursues the night,
A wild onager, chased from his thicket by night
coming from dawn, his temple-lock arrives to reinforce it.
Seeks the shelter of dawn lest the spears overtake him

A valiant man barred the escorting of the women in howdahs,
Unescorted by hounds a hero came riding
with an Indian sword, guarding his Hind among the caravan's women.
On a sleek mare, safe from the pack though they raged for his blood

While Waran, grown tame, held the reins for his masters
a rein whose slack encircled his wrist like a bracelet.
A gift of his grace had made the halter his crown

A youth whose glance the sword matches,
A steed when the sword has inflamed his excitement
and whose stature the spear rivals on a morning of battle.
Will straighten the lance though it bow to his chest

When he wishes, his sword-strokes turn white blades red
His kick makes the white spear crimson with blood
and leave the sword's edge resembling his cheek.
And swerves from the blade as it sweeps to his cheek

My heart, aflame with longing—whenever I say it has died down
Then my heart, when I said it was lost in the dark,
with the night, the wafting wind revives its blaze.
Revived by the whispering winds in the blackness of night,
ومَنْand who ليis there for me إذاwhen آبَreturned الظّلامthe darkness بهَدْأةٍwith stillness

And who will help me when darkness returns with stillness?
And when gloom was unfurled, who was left me for company,
Were what afflicts me in a mountain, it would crush it.
Lonely, now passion had severed the ties of old friendship?

My companions departed, and I was left gazing
But then came Love, a bold guest, to beset me
at a fellowship whose bond time had undone.
When Night had dispatched her armies across the wide world,
وقدand already تركونيthey left me بالجِبالِin the mountains مُدَلّهاًbewildered with love

They left me bewildered with love in the mountains,
I broke my own ribs and went swiftly to meet him,
while they took the lowlands and uplands of Iraq.
Taking from lightning the sparks of its glowing ember,

وَحيداً وقد جازَ الهَوى فِيَّ حَدّه
Against my will were their departure and my remaining
And lit up my heart with a fire in the darkness
alone, with passion exceeding its bounds within me.
That my melancholy guest might discern his intention,
وإذand when لمnot يَقُمْremained عِنْدِيwith me سوىexcept الطّيْفِthe phantom منهمُof them

وإذْ لم يَسِرْ منّي سوى القلبِ وَحده
When nothing of them remained with me except their phantom,
A foe who presumed to call himself guest! His name
and nothing of me journeyed except my heart alone.
Was unwelcome, yet I did not spurn him away.

What a heart you are, whose distance I wished for!
O who but a flash of lightning that pierced through my eyelids
Yet when it went far from me, I remembered its companionship.
Could take to swift flight after wounding my eyes!

I find among the strangest things reproaching a companion,
More ardent than hand-clapping, their vanishing image
then returning to affection toward him and praising him.
Opened the way for my tears in unceasing flood,

وشَرّاً منَ الشّرِّ الّذي فيه فَقْده
A man sees a thing as wholly evil while it is present,
Breaking down restraint between a lover's eyelids
yet its loss is worse than the evil it contains.
When the tears from his eyes responded to their light.

I have grown accustomed to the terrors of nights, as though I were
Yet how sweet is the pain of love! How intense its delight!
a rock beneath pouring rain, its hard surface smoothed.
And how pleasing the anguish that absence evokes!

I have suffered such partings that what visits me
O a wild gazelle with languishing eyes, cropping
from time would leave anyone else unable to count it.
My heart for his pasture instead of brooks by the valley,

A thirsty one, lapping the wine of soft music,
for one far away, while night had scattered its troops,
Cooled for him in the goblet of vines by the winter,
حطَبْتُI made firewood of ضلوعيmy ribs ثُمّthen أقبلتُI approached قابساًtaking a flame

I made firewood of my ribs, then came to take a flame
Let others envy me, gaunt-ribbed and famished,
from the lightning as it spent the night striking its fire-stick.
My fate and his by those cool waters are equal.

And I kindled a fire in the darkness of my ribs
Seeking fulfilment, the two stand on common ground,
so that the guest of sorrow might see his destination at night.
The goal is attained by those God has destined to win.

وإنْ لم أُرِدْه زائراً لم أرُدّه
An enemy who called himself my guest—for that title,
So the horses relieve their own cares when they gallop
though I did not want him visiting, I did not turn him away.
And carry the heroes whose love the fair lost to gladness

Ah, who will deal with lightning that stole the eye's sleep,
While the steeds of the knights, trampling hard through the nightlands
then flashed away, giving its wakefulness to the gap between my eyelids?
Scattered the dark with the stirrups' rich jingle, till sunrise

It waved both hands again and again, opening
Came, bringing glory and victory, and any who doubted
a path for my tears that their phantom had blocked—
The power to conquer the legions of darkness were silenced.

channels of a torrent between a lover's eyelids;
For long my heart wished to attain this glory
when tears from them rain upon his cheek, they furrow it.
Till now, in my life's final days, I have reached its zenith.

By God, the solace of hopes—how sweet it is!
The glory I sought has appeared to my eyes, arising
By God, the torment of passion—how severe it is!
In full, as no vision before had power to perceive.

By God, a dark-pupiled, white-eyed gazelle that grazes
As though all others had tasted its sweetness in jest
on my heart, not al-Aqiq's water and its laurel!
While we were reserved till in truth we could feel it,

Deliciously dark-lipped, he polishes with an arak twig
As though their pursuit of glory was merely pretended
his hailstones, withholding their coolness from the lovesick one.
While ours was the true goal, the sincere intention.

O brother in lofty ambition, the stars in their setting
other than myself, who found his watering place in that water!

While the heavens revolve in exaltation around you,
the one whose fortune God favors attains his wishes.
Girding their loins to recite your great virtues,

A hero whose promise cannot be broken by waiting,
whenever they climb the desert's crests at speed, they cleave it,
For kindness has killed all the rancour within.

His people know no distress that his hands cannot rescue
with every son of resolve who makes travel his chief concern.
However much the eyes yearn to look on his face,

They endured a night before Qasan, traversing it,
He outstrips all petition, munificent even before
a long night that had buttoned its cloak across the horizons.
The plea has been voiced, nor waits to be asked.

The throngs that he welcomes o'erflow his pavilions,
the obstinacy of nights makes his pale camels kneel beside him.
Yet awe of his presence reveals them like deserts.

His arrogance humbles the proud even while they oppose him,
until today I fulfilled my heart's desire.
Forced to concede, should they dare disavow his repute.

A foolish pretender to royalty needs but his gesture
and no beholder before me could encompass it.
To strip the vain tyrant of sceptre and crown.

No flatterer ever acclaimed him in hope of his favour,
and left its seriousness for us until we reached it.
But the truth leaves his rivals ashamed to deny his renown.

As though we ourselves had sought glory in its literal reality,
The cheeks of earth's kings are envious of his shoes
while what they sought to reach was only metaphor.
That tread, in their glory, soil his feet have ennobled.

Confess itenhanced by his faith in the name of his God.

Can servants of God compare in their glory and grandeur
with a belt, deliberately imitating his servant.

He cares not for praise that is given for favours,

Or thanks that are owed him for kindnesses shown.

Affairs of the state- he entrusts to the worthy,
the heights of an abode whose hollow the sun has never reached.
Content with repute that no panegyric can match.

but whose forgiveness kills the rancor in his breast.
A degree that no man has equalled in courtesy.

مُعاراً له إن أنكَروهُ استَردّه
In peacetime, his enemies' heads remain upon them
The brother who quells any rebel sedition,
only as his loan; if they disown him, he reclaims them.
Comes armed with a forest of lances to aid you.

إذاwhen كانthere is يومٌa day يَسلُبُstripping النَصْلَthe blade غِمْدهof its sheath
إذا كان يومٌ يَسلُبُ النَصْلَ غِمْده
A hint of his judgment suffices for barren kingship
The monarch of monarchs is ruled by his vision,
on a day that strips the blade of its sheath.
Stretching out a hand till the kingdom was secured,
وماand not اعترفacknowledged الحُسّادُthe envious حُبّاًout of love بفَضْلِهhis merit
وما اعترف الحُسّادُ حُبّاً بفَضْلِه

ولكنّهم لا يَستطيعون جَحْده
The envious did not acknowledge his merit out of love,
And now like Alexander in retaining possession,
but they cannot deny it.
Since strategy served as the ladder to triumph.

من العِزِّ بل ما يُوطِئُ الأرضَ نَهده
The cheeks of the earth's kings envy his sandal
I see glory sprout two branches of high renown
for its honor—indeed, even what his mighty steed sets upon the earth.
Each casting a shadow that covers the world.

إذا كان دِينُ اللهِ يُسْمِيهِ مَجده
Who could aspire to rival his excellence
Most wondrous in any age, two heroes advancing
when God's religion calls him its glory?
Of equal in scale whenever their merits are weighed.

And has Ubayd Allah, in glory and eminence,
O my friend, while your glorious qualities dazzle,
an equal, should a boastful rival wish to name one?
I hone the keen wit of my songs for your name.

He renounced the world, except in cultivating a protégé
I compose them deliberately, wasting no labour,
and winning thanks from a youth who had received his bounty.

He entrusted affairs to those who assumed charge, his sufficiency resting
Writing proudly in gleaming and exquisite metres,
on a noble lineage whose rich store praise cannot exhaust.
Admitting the effort would daunt even David.

Reproach for a noble is manifold increase
a way of noble deeds that he made anew.
Of my zeal, though my hands cannot match the attempt.

How much praise from visiting delegations he has earned,
Tormenting my readers, but deeper the anguish
and what fine provision he has laid up for the hereafter!
Of cares that have poisoned the joy of my life.

O you who devote your support to religion throughout time,
I have genius to choose apt words for my verses
your blessings to mankind, and your affection to excellence,
With potent effect when I stir it to action,
ومَنand one who جَلَّis exalted عنabove شُغْلٍan occupation يَجُلّgrow great بهِthrough it الورىmankind

And a heart ever brimming, like the hive of the bee, with
even if your mudd does not reach your rivals' sa'.
Sustaining sweetness to lavish its treasure.

Your brother is the one who, whenever a demon of sedition rises,
My thoughts were to meet you, fulfilling their promise.
comes to it with the ropes of lances and binds it.
Now time has arrived to accomplish that vow.

فَمدَّ يَداً للمُلْكِ حتّى أسَدّه
And he whose judgment the Sultan of sultans discerned,
The world and its changes are nothing to me
then stretched a hand toward kingship until he set it straight.
If you are still there. Let existence exhaust itself!

Thus he became like King Alexander in might,
To me all its phases are clothes to be worn for awhile
because he made Mu'in's counsel his rampart.
And discarded, decayed by the years and the seasons.

I see excellence as a root extending two branches toward eminence,
You attained the sublime rank, and so became its adornment.
each casting a shadow that it spreads over the earth.
We excelled, and you were the sum of our glory.

It is a wonder that two appeared in one age,
What you now have received is a token of blessings to follow
yet each, if you measured him, would be that age's peerless one.
When Morning unveils what the new day will bring.

O patron, the brilliance of whose excellence has never ceased
to renew for him the composing and appraising of verse.

and brought him eminence's new treasures and its heirlooms.

I adorned his ears with pearls from what I had strung
and said to him: pardon a poor giver and his effort.

A double-woven coat of smooth mail upon the noble man's honor,
though David's hand did not measure out its links.

are troubles that made life's ease bitter for me.

I do not care about time and its vicissitudes:
if you are mine, let time exert its utmost effort.

Time to me is nothing but a garment you were clothed in,
to wear it out in a reign and make it new again.

What you have attained is glad tidings of what you will attain:
when dawn arrives, the sun follows it.
