Instead, his fingers would polish with gold
I am grateful for the blessings you bestowed on me
the pearls of eloquence whenever its sea swelled.
And he who disbelieves blessing has certainly blasphemed set forth.
إنّindeed الخليفةَthe caliph والتّأييدَand support يَكنُفُهenfolding him

لمّاwhen اغتدَىhe came to be لكفاةِof the capable servants of المُلْكِthe kingdom مُختَبِراa tester
The caliph—with support surrounding him—
You are the spring and my distinction is in anticipation of it
when he set about testing the kingdom's capable servants,
Like wood that returned to being green after needing set forth.

held in his hand only a single sure-aimed arrow,
So instigate for me the compassion of our minister and say
though he scattered enough arrows to fill a quiver.
About me whatever I say of words famed set forth.

The state's sure-aimed arrow, with unyielding resolve: whenever
Strive for me with a sincere glance from you only one
the caliph shoots, through him he strikes his greatest targets.
Until I say to suspicions of fate how do you see set forth.

If time becomes a dark night,
And order time whose crimes we forgave
his endeavors appear within it as brilliant stars.
Obliging with excuses so he who made excuses did not sin set forth.

O you, in whose presence my earlier days
Renew the mark of two favors previously granted
had your deeds as shining blazes upon their faces,
Since marks are like marks even if time is long set forth.
إنّيindeed I لشاكرُam surely thankful ماfor what أسلفْتَyou bestowed earlier منof نِعَمٍblessings

I am indeed thankful for the blessings you bestowed earlier
You both remain in bliss and blessings together
upon me; whoever denies a blessing has proved ungrateful.
A life that refused for you both to ward off bliss set forth.

كالعُودِlike a branch عادhas become again إلىfor الإيراقِleafing مُفتَقِراin need
You are spring; my excellence, awaiting that spring,
So how much did an envier desire and found your purity
is like a branch once more in need of leafing.
Casting dirtiness in it but it did not succeed set forth.
فَهُزَّso stir ليfor me عِطْفَthe compassion of مولاناour lord الوزيرِthe vizier وقُلْand say

So stir our lord the vizier's compassion for me, and say
Oh glorious one I never visited intimacy warmed at peace
on my behalf—and whatever I say becomes known—
Except he saw for praise a chance and aimed to pluck set forth.
جُدْbe generous ليto me بنَظرةِwith a glance of صِدقٍsincerity منكَfrom you واحدةٍa single one
حتّىso that أقولَI may say لريْبِto the mischief of الدّهرِtime كيفَhow تَرىdo you see
'Grant me one sincere glance from you,
How much I wasted my fortune and he preserved it
so I may ask time's mischief, “How does it look to you?”
And I forgot myself and he remembered set forth.

And command the age, whose crimes we have pardoned,
When will crimes in speech and action be related from both of us
to take refuge in an excuse: one who apologizes has not sinned.
Pleasing to hearing and sight set forth.

Renew the bounty of two established grants, now long grown old;
When will we return to our ways again
an allowance, like a campsite's trace, fades when time grows long.'
Tell me will that be possible at all in time you think set forth.
بَقِيتُماmay you both remain فيin نَعيمٍbliss واردَيْنِdrawing water معاًtogether

May you both remain in bliss, drawing together
In the cup of my lifetime time left naught
from a life that refuses you departure from its watering-place.
Except bitterness slightly soiled by distance from you set forth.
فكمfor how many بغَىsought حاسدٌan envier لاقَىwho encountered صفاءَكماyour shared purity

How many an envier, finding your shared clarity, sought
So what remains of my breaths all of it
to cast murk into it, yet could not!
Gratitude for previous blessings shining set forth.
ياO ماجداًnoble one لمnot أَزُرْdid I visit مأْنوسَthe welcoming سُدّتِهthreshold of his court

إلاّexcept that رأَىhe saw فُرصةًan opportunity للحمدِfor praise فابْتَدَراand hastened
O noble one, never did I visit his welcoming threshold
My excuse is the fortunes of life clearly apparent
without his seeing an opportunity for praise and hastening to seize it.
Their sufficiency so accept the excuse which is evident set forth.

وكمand how often نَسيِتُI forgot أناI myself نَفْسيmyself وقدwhile indeed ذَكراhe remembered
How often I squander my own share, while he preserves it;
I was short since I did not find me from you a companion
how often I forget myself, while he remembers!
And I returned since I did not find me from you patient set forth.

When shall we and you recover what has slipped away—
Below you the guidance of poetry its conveyer brought
words and deeds that delight both ear and eye?
Who if able to travel would perform hajj and umrah set forth.
متىwhen نَعودُshall we return إلىto العاداتِthe accustomed ways ثانيةًonce again
قُلْtell ليme أذلكَis that فيwithin وُسْعِthe capacity of الزّمانِtime تُرىdo you think
When shall we return once more to our accustomed ways?
The house of who the favors draw near did not come
Tell me: is that within time's power, do you think?
And the absent one whose gratitude was present was not absent set forth.
فيin كأْسِthe cup of عُمْريَmy lifetime ماnot أبقَىhas left الزَّمانُtime سوىanything but

سُؤْرٍa leftover draught قليلٍsmall ببُعْديthrough my distance منكfrom you قدalready كَدِراgrown cloudy
In the cup of my lifetime, time has left nothing but
Indeed the highest of palaces for its pursuer
a little remaining draught, clouded by my distance from you.
Is a house that, if one of my poems for whoever feels set forth.

So reach the remnant of my breaths; all of them
You remain for praise and the praiser hears them
are thanks for your past grace, which dazzled.
In the shade of a kingdom that kept its purity from harm set forth.
عُذْريmy excuse حوادثُthe calamities of دَهريmy lifetime وهْيand they ظاهرةٌare evident

My excuse is my lifetime's calamities, and they are evident;
As long as the planting by hands in their positions is seen
may you be spared them, so accept the excuse made plain.
Gratitude of the free people of the world its fruit set forth.
قَصّرتُI fell short إذwhen لمnot أَجِدْI found ليfor myself منكfrom you مُقتَرَباًa way of approach
وعُدْتُand I returned إذْwhen لمnot أجِدْI found ليfor myself عنكaway from you مُصطَبراany patience
I fell short when I found no way to draw near to you,
and returned when I found no patience for being away from you.
فدونكمْso take, all of you هَدْيَa sacrificial offering of شِعْرٍverse ساقَdrove مُشعِرُهits consecrator

مَنone who لوif أطاقَcould endure مَسيراًa journey حَجّwould perform hajj واعتَمراand perform umrah
So take this sacrificial offering of verse, driven forth by its consecrator,
one who, if he could endure the journey, would perform hajj and umrah.

ولمand not يكُنis غائباًabsent مَنone whose شُكرُهhis thanks حضَراare present
The home of one whose generous gifts draw near is not distant,
nor is one absent whose thanks are present.

Loftier for its builder than a palace
is a verse of my poetry, once it travels to one who understands.

May you remain for praise and panegyrists, hearing them,
in the shade of a reign that banished murk from its purity,

are seen to bear the gratitude of noble people as fruit.
