    Your slumber after their departure is forbidden,

    Even if reproach and blame abound.

    For what a snake-bitten man, carefree at heart, suffers is not

    Like what a youth whom passion has harmed endures.

    And had passion accompanied the brown shafts of lofty spears,

    They would not have pierced, though their roughest obstacle were thamam grass.

    Indeed, the howdahs have hidden a full moon,

    And yesterday [uncertain reading] the tents were his rising-place.

    With what can you ransom him, when we possess

    After his departure nothing but bones?

    I restrain my tears for him; yet gnawing

    At my heart, through his cruelty, is burning thirst.

    And the cup drinks its fill of kisses from his lips,

    And the veil plucks the roses of his cheeks.

    سَواءَ وِدهِ لَكَ وَالمَنام

    He laughs while the nights have made you weep;

    His affection for you and a dream are alike.

    فَما نَعماؤُهُ إِلّا اِنتِقام

    He grants union for an hour and turns away for an age;

    His favors, then, are nothing but vengeance.

    And union with beautiful women is not sweet

    If lasting constancy does not accompany that union.

    If one day the pale camels bear them far away,

    Then bid your last breath of life farewell.

    سِهامك مِن لَواحظها السِهام

    Wild-ox calves, except that they are archers;

    Your share of her glances is arrows.

    وَإِن هِيَ أَدبَرَت جَنَّ الظَلام

    When she approaches, dawn appears;

    And when she turns away, darkness falls.

    And were she not mentioned in the course of drinking,

    The wine would not be sweet to its drinker.

    And were it not for Farfur's cherished son,

    Reflection and verse would not have come together.

    My gallant brother—were it not for the solace

    My heart finds in him, death would be sweet to me.

    Together we suckled the milk of lofty virtues,

    From a breast whose nursling is never weaned.

    And he broke my heart's seal while it was still untried,

    And but for him, the seal would not have been broken.

    And he roused his striving to gain distinction,

    While the rest of mankind sleep heedless of gain.

    O my lord—rather, a thousand lords

    To one like me, with Time itself his servant!

    وَأَنتَ لَدَيهِ بَشر وَاِبتِسام

    Your father is glory's mouth, and its face comes from him;

    And beside him, you are gladness and a smile.

    وَأَنتَ نَسيمُها وَهُوَ الغَمام

    And these people are nothing but gardens;

    And you are their breeze, while he is the raincloud.

    A raincloud showering kindness—yet,

    When you ask him for rain, he is a rainless cloud.

    And I do not deny his favors, but

    When spears intertwine, the conflict grows mighty.
