Where are the healers? My heart today is wounded,

    Love-stricken, a plaything of anguish.

A soul streams down my cheek, and is mistaken

For tears by one sick at heart, who has no soul.

And love is a line that gleams, inscribed upon the breast,

Translated into the tongue of longing, made plain.

I laid my cheek upon submission's palm, and within me is

Humiliation, cast down upon the thresholds of glory.

Then the lightning of Wadi al-Shaʿb flashed, and awoke

The sleepers of my longing, and incense and wormwood gave off their scent.

And a caller from that encampment arose, reciting to me

A couplet to console my heart, bearing an allusion:

Indeed, when the doors of kings are shut,

Never despair, for God's door is open.
