فَمِن المُقيم لِشدة وَعَناءِ
The companions departed at midmorning from al-Jarʿāʾ;
The mixed potion shone at dawn from the glasses,
who, then, remains to face hardship and suffering?
So who will stay due to the severity and hardship?

God knows that my morning in the sanctuary
God knows that my mornings in love
is, since their departure, no different from my evening.
Are the same after their departure and my evenings.

Calamities fold around me, as though I were
Misfortunes fold over me as if
love's secret, and they my entrails.
I am the secret of passion and as if they are my intestines.

And what the heart laments most is an unapproachable beloved:
The most my heart complains, forbidden
in his glance is my sickness, and from him my cure.
Is in its glance my remedy, and from it my medicine.

A basil sprig of beauty, played upon
The basil of beauty who was played with
by the east wind, not the palm of tawny wine.
By the breeze of youth, not the rest of grey hair.

Beauty's waters flow through his sides,
The waters of beauty flow in its limbs
as longing flows from him through my limbs.
Flowing from it into my limbs like mercury.

A moon: when he draws back the veil to speak,
A moon that when the veil was removed, speaking
the eyes of desire gaze fixedly at him.
The eyes of passions stared at it.

It ruled the rule of every enamored heart
by his glances from the realm of creation.
Its glances are from the world of creation.

If the night of separation hides him, his brow
If the night of passion hides it, its forehead
is a dawn that reveals him with its light.
Dawns light up on it with lights.

How often I have spent the night, ribs folded round burning grief,
How much with a twisted chest I spent the night in love
there closing my eyelids over searing anguish.
I closed my eyelids with it on the carpets.

So I am blamed for my abandon and my devotion to him;
So the mother in it undresses and devotes,
and why, on his account, my smiling and my weeping?
And the signs in it are my smile and my crying.

Perhaps time will grant me the attainment of my wishes,
May time benefit me in attaining the wish
since I have sought refuge with the peerless scholar.
Where I took refuge in the most knowledgeable of scholars.

My Master, but the Master of creation in purity
of inward sincerity among the children of Eve.
The sincerity of the mantle from the daughters of Eve.

You are the one who always fostered loyalty
while mankind's father was still in his clay and water.
And the father of mankind in its clay and water.

only the milk of unassailable might.
Except the milk of mighty chastity.

O you who my worries flocked to
when I came to it seeking water—and my hope hovered too.
When I came to you seeking rain and my hope.

And take from the molding of poetry the messages
strung by the hands of understanding and judgment.
I composed with the hands of understanding and opinions.

Alas! The people's poetry cannot be compared
verse ennobled by your listening.
To poetry honored by your listening.
