Spring has arrived: there is no shame upon you

in casting off the bridle, nor in sipping wine.

Tawny wine, whose mixing I do not permit

except with the saliva of a perfumed young gazelle.

When brought forth, it turns night's darkness into morning,

as though it had been pressed from rays of light.

Rise, bring it where the chatterer has begun his morning,

in the thicket, absorbed in cooing:

a bird that lent the bough a harp, strung

with strings of the rain's silver.

The east wind confides in him, and he in her,

memories of love from ages past.

And rise, so we may seize youth before

gray hair assails serenity with troubles.

And drink beside the roses of the hills, if you do not find

the roses of cheeks, for want of a dinar.

And in love, set with your thoughts the snare of wishes,

to catch a shadow or a phantom passing in the night.

All this—yet I do not see, should I lose the one

I love, the gardens of eternity as anything but fire.

Far from it! Neither the mellow flute, nor the rapture of

aged wine, nor the melody of strings,

nor the wistful murmur of winds at evening,

nor the birds' unhurried singing before dawn,

is lovelier to me than exchanging words with beloved

ones with ardent longing, in the radiance of moons—

each one worshipped for beauty, granted sway

over whatever he wishes, enslaving the free.
