Pass the wine around, O my drinking companion,

    red as a slapped cheek.

It courses through the spirits of reason,

like healing in an ailing body.

    And stay when darkness falls,

cloaked in the shade of the vines.

For the air is clear, as though

the breaths of the breeze had polished it.

And the blossoms of the stars scattered,

like a finely strung necklace coming apart.

Rise, bring it, and behold it

from the hand of one with a mellow, plaintive song.

A full moon who shows you charms

with which he captivates the sage's mind.

    وَإِذا رَنا فَبِكُل ريم

    If he sways, he puts the spears to shame;

and when he gazes, every gazelle.

In a garden where there were woven

by the east wind's hands brocades of fresh growth.

    The flowers laughed there when

the eyelid of the clouds wept.

How many a night I spent

in its shade, clear of countenance,

recalling the days of the idol-like beauties,

putting remembrance of the ruins out of mind,

drunk on the wine of youth,

    exulting in abiding companionship,

    when youth was tender,

and time was at the dawn of bliss.
