O gazelle who bears unsealed musk

in a mouth that puts pure wine to shame.

Beauty has given you the water of bliss to drink,

making red anemones bloom upon your cheeks.

Do not leave me—may my soul be your ransom—alone,

lamenting estrangement that grieves a friend.

I go about, while in the chains of your temple-locks

my heart lies; so pity a captive who is free.

Your two eyes have wounded my reason; therefore

the pearls of my tears have turned to carnelian.

If we spoke of your dusky lips in the presence of wine,

it would spend the night without finding anyone sober.

Through you our souls rejoice and find rest,

so they choose you as their gentle companion.

Morning wine, morning wine, before our fortune turns gray—

    or evening wine, evening wine!

We pluck the blossom of youth and make merry,

where we find longing to be a lovely garden.

Between the promise of our hopes and a threat

from you, the lying one begs the truthful one for respite.
