    عَظم الداء وَالدَوا

    Immense is my suffering from love;

Great are the malady and the cure.

Whoever sees love as a creed

Dies of longing and burning grief.

May my father, then I, be ransom for a young gazelle

Who has dwelt nowhere but in the heart.

    If his brother saw him,

And he appeared before him, he would fall.

He snared my reason with his temple-lock,

And with it bent my resolve.

He unfurled estrangement; would that he

Had folded up the expanse of separation.

Alas for my heart! I admonished it

Against its passion, but it did not desist.

    And of forgetting its love

It never thought or formed the intent.

Whenever it glimpsed a flash of lightning,

    It remembered al-Safh and al-Liwa.

    Or when a dove sang,

    It nearly died of separation.

    No—by a heart he melted

And turned away from all others,

And by tears he treated lightly

    That poured down upon Tuwa:

    Beauty does not turn aside

At a reproacher's censure of love.

How can one enslaved by love find solace

When he has lost his way or gone astray?

    Manjaki—his heart

    Has indeed held every pledge.

So peace, passed from narrator to narrator,

    Sweet in remembrance and retelling,

To a prophet and a master

Who reached the horizon, then stood upright.
