إِذا كانَت سجاح اليَوم تُفتي

إِذا كانَت سجاح اليَوم تُفتي

وَكاتبها مسيلمة الكَذوب

وَكاتبها مسيلمة الكَذوب

If Sajah is issuing fatwas today,

If falsehood's preachers over us prevail,

And her scribe is Musaylima the inveterate liar,

And liars like Musailama's tales regale,

فَإِن فَسَد الزَمان فَغَير بدع

فَإِن فَسَد الزَمان فَغَير بدع

وَإِن هَلَكَ الجَميع فَلا عَجيب

وَإِن هَلَكَ الجَميع فَلا عَجيب

Then if the age grows corrupt, it is nothing new;

If evil days on all men darkness bring,

And if everyone perishes, it is no wonder.

And doom on all the world comes gathering,

وَأَعجب مِن كِلا الشَخصين جَهل

وَأَعجب مِن كِلا الشَخصين جَهل

تَجسم وَهُوَ في الشام الخَطيب

تَجسم وَهُوَ في الشام الخَطيب

And more astonishing than both these people is ignorance

Less strange than either sage in error bound,

That has taken bodily form: it is the preacher in al-Sham.
