لَمnot أَنسَI forget لَيلةa night إِذwhen مَرَّpassed الكَرىslumber غاطاsinking
بِناظِريَّinto my two eyes وَلَمand not أَعهدهماI had known them both هَجَعاthey both slept
I have not forgotten the night when slumber passed, sinking
I have not forgotten the night when fate passed
into my eyes, which I had never known to sleep.
Before my eyes which knew no sleep,
وَزارَنيand visited me طَيفُهُhis phantom وَهَناًby night فَأَرَقنيso made me sleepless
كَبارقlike a lightning flash بِخلالamid الودقthe rain قَدalready لَمَعاflashed
And his phantom visited me by night and made me sleepless,
And his ghost visited me, making me weak and wakeful
like a lightning flash that had gleamed amid the rain.
As lightning flashes through the branches of a tree.
فَماso not وَحَقكby your honor عَنout of ودaffection زِيارتهُhis visit
لَكنbut لِيزجرto rebuke طَرفيmy eye وَالسهادand sleeplessness مَعاtogether
So, by your honor, his visit was not out of affection,
It was not to renew his friendship that he came,
but to rebuke my eye and sleeplessness together.
But to chide my eyes and reproach their sleep.
