سَأَلتَكI asked you ودّاًaffection خالِصاًpure وَتَرفقاand gentleness
فَماyet not اِزددتَI gained إِلّاexcept حَسرَةًsorrow وَتَحرقاand burning anguish
I asked you for pure affection and gentleness.
Yet I gained only sorrow and burning anguish.
وَأَسهَرتand you kept awake آماليmy hopes وَأَبعدَتand you distanced مَطلَبيwhat I sought
وَقَربتand you brought near حِينيmy hour of death وَاِستَبحتand you deemed permissible التَفَرُقاparting
And you kept my hopes sleepless and pushed what I sought far away.
And you brought my hour of death near and deemed parting permissible.
وَكَدرتand you clouded كَأسيmy cup فيin هَواكlove for you بِأَدمُعيwith my tears
فَهلاًthen why not شَرِبناهاwe drank it سَلافاًpure wine مروَّقاclarified
And you clouded my cup, in my love for you, with my tears.
Why, then, did we not drink it as pure, clarified wine?
