Had the full moon felt shame, it would have hidden

    when Rajab, my soul, appeared.

If in some respect it has resembled

him, then ask it: where is his mouth’s sweet coolness?

Where are the front teeth that lodge

flame’s scorching heat in our hearts?

Where are the glances and the cheeks,

    and that wondrous figure?

    None like him among non-Arabs

is found, nor among the Arabs.

A gazelle fawn has taken our minds captive,

and hearts he has indeed stolen.

He has shed blood; and if you ask

him, he does not know the reason.

    His coquetry now says

    to the love-stricken, without fear:

No request of yours will be granted

by me in return for poetry or song.

If you seek to catch me in love,

    then set snares of gold.

And submit, abase yourself, and do not speak

of noble standing there, nor of lineage.
