وَلاnor مِنof الدَمعthe tears جاريهِits streaming tears وَسائِلَهُand its flowing tears
وَلا مِن الدَمع جاريهِ وَسائِلَهُ
Besotted with you, his pleas avail him nothing,
My love for you is fruitless and in vain,
nor do his tears, streaming and flowing.
Neither tears flowing help lessen my pain.

وَعَنَّفتهُ عَلى الشَكوى عَواذلَهُ
Patience is scarce for him; love has humbled his soul,
Patience made weak by love's agony,
and his female reproachers rebuked him for lamenting.
Complaints silenced forcibly.

أَسحارُهُ أَبَداً تَبكي أَصائلهُ
A year he spent far from you against his will; so over
A year passed with you distant and aloof,
its predawn hours, its late afternoons forever weep.
Its dawns forever weeping with grief.

And the cup, since he left it, complains of thirst,
Since you left, the cup complains of thirst,
and the garden's groves have withered from grief.
The meadow's buds all shriveled and curst.

Today you laid the burden of your absence on the heart of a youth,
Today, a young heart bears your sorrow,
whose nature is gentler than the valley's breeze.
More gentle than the valley's breeze at morrow.
