كُن حَريصاً وَاِجمَع مِن المال ما شئ

ت فَفي الجَمع جَمع كُل حَواس

Be eager, and amass as much wealth as you pleas—

Be greedy, and gather as much wealth as you wish;

—e, for amassing gathers every faculty.

for gathering wealth gathers all the senses.

وَدَع المال بَعدَ مَوتك لِلقَو

وَدَع المال بَعدَ مَوتك لِلقَو

م يَضيعون بَينَ كاس وَطاس

م يَضيعون بَينَ كاس وَطاس

And after your death, leave the wealth to the peo—

And leave the wealth after your death to the people

—ple, who will squander it between cup and bowl.

هُوَ خَير مِن أَن تُؤَمل قَرضاً

هُوَ خَير مِن أَن تُؤَمل قَرضاً

فَيَردوك خامد الأَنفاس

فَيَردوك خامد الأَنفاس

That is better than hoping for a loan,

That is better than hoping for a loan,

only for them to turn you away while you are still breathing.

وَتَحَقَق بِأَن كُل شَنيع

وَقَبيح يعدُّ بَينَ الناس

And be certain that every shameful

and ugly thing reckoned among people

and ugly in people's reckoning

صارَ فَخراً تَباهَت الناس فيهِ

صارَ فَخراً تَباهَت الناس فيهِ

وَالقَبيح الشَنيع في الإِفلاس

وَالقَبيح الشَنيع في الإِفلاس

has become a source of pride in which people vie,

has become a source of pride that people boast of;

while the ugly, shameful thing is bankruptcy.

while what is ugly and vile lies in being penniless.
