Ruwawa lies empty of Asma, and so does al-Sanad,

and al-Sahb, and al-Qaʿ of ʿAyrayn, and al-Jumud.

ʿArsh Khakh too is deserted, save that there lies

a campsite where a rain-trench and piled stones remain,

and bowed hearthstones there, like crouching doves,

and a matted bed of cooking-pot ashes, caked together.

Yet not long ago I saw it full of life,

    with her there, that valley-bend and the dunes stretching unbroken;

when love's intended course had not yet been altered

    by a harsh-tempered, unsociable loner.

He stays resentful, though I have no thought of seeing her,

as though, when he sees me visiting, he were sick with grief.

Ah, what a beloved—if only, with love

of her own, she would repay you for the longing you feel!

She rose, showing you her spaced, finely serrated teeth,

like hail from summer rainclouds traveling by night.

Al-Simak's rain brought her its first showers,

till the sandhills and bare uplands were laden with it.

And the eyes of a lone nursing doe, for whom grew freely

lush herbage and tender arak fruit, its lark singing.

Pearls adorn the hollow of her throat, taken in hand

by their stringers, who threaded them with skill.

Pearls and gold beads, and rubies setting them off,

as though, when revealed, they were blazing ghada embers.

And I marveled at what she said at Dhu Salam,

while her tears streamed, mingled with powdered kohl.

She said, “Stay—do not leave us!” So I told her,

“Indeed, though sorely tormented, I bear grief within me.”
