1. قَد وَدَّعَتكَ وداعَ الصارِمِ القالي

    نَعَم وداعَ تَناءٍ غَيرَ إِدلالِ

    She has bidden you a farewell of severance and loathing—

    yes, a farewell of estrangement, not coquetry.

  2. وَعادَ ما وَدَّعَتني مِن مَوَدَّتِها

    بَعدَ المَواثيق كالجارِي مِنَ الآلِ

    And the affection she left with me has become,

    after solemn pledges, like a streaming mirage.

  3. فَقُلتُ لَمّا أَتاني أَنَّها خَتَرَت

    وَطاوَعَت قَولَ أَعدائي وَعُذَّالي

    So I said, when word reached me that she had betrayed me

    and heeded the words of my enemies and my reproachers:

  4. إِن تَصرِمِ الحَبلَ أَو تُرضِ الوشاةَ بِنا

    أو تُمسِ قَد رَضِيت مِنّا بِأَبدالِ

    If she severs the cord or gratifies the slanderers at our expense,

    or evening finds her content with others in our place,

  5. فَقَد أَراها وَما تَبغي بِنا بَدَلاً

    وَلا تُطيعُ بِنا في سالِفِ الحالِ

    I have indeed seen her seeking no one in our stead,

    and heeding no one against us in days gone by.

  6. أَبقى لَها الدَهرُ مِن وُدّي الَّذي عَهِدَت

    أَمرَينِ لَم يَبرَحا مِنّي عَلى بالِ

    Time has preserved for her, of the love she once knew,

    two things that have never left my mind:

  7. شَوقاً إِلَيها إِذا بُتَّت مَناسِبُها

    يَوماً وَأَبصَرتُ مِنها رَسمَ أَطلالِ

    longing for her, when the ties to her are severed

    one day, and I see the traces of her ruined dwellings;

  8. وَحِفظَ ما استَودَعَت عِندي وَقَد زَعَمَت

    أَن لَيسَ يُحسِنُ حِفظَ السِرِّ أَمثالي

    and guarding what she entrusted to me, though she claimed

    that those like me are not good at keeping secrets.

  9. إِن كانَ يُسلي فُؤادي ما أَتَيتِ بِهِ

    فَلا رَجَعتُ إِلى أَهلي وَلا مالي

    If what you have done makes my heart forget you,

    then may I never return to my family or my wealth!

  10. جُهداً لأُعلِمَها الوُدَّ الَّذي عَهِدَت

    عِندي وَأَكَّدتُ أَقوالاً بِأَقوالِ

    Earnestly, to show her the love she once knew

    in me, I reinforced my words with further words.
