سَلامُSalam ذِكرُكِremembrance of you مُلصَقٌfastened بِلِسانيto my tongue
وَعَلىand for هَواكِlove of you تَعُودُنيrevisit me أَحزانِيmy sorrows
Salam, remembrance of you clings to my tongue,
The mention of you clings to my tongue
And for love of you, my sorrows revisit me.
And for your love my sorrows return
مَاwhat لِيwith me رَأَيتُكِI saw you فيin المَنامِa dream مُطيعَةًyielding
وَإِذاand when انتَبَهتُI awoke لَجَجتِyou persisted stubbornly فيin العِصيانِdefiance
Why did I see you yielding in a dream,
Why did I see you obedient in my dream
Yet when I awoke, you persisted in defiance?
Yet when I awoke you were rebellious and defiant
أَبَداًforever مُحِبُّكِyour lover مُمسِكٌholding fast بِفؤادِهِto his heart
يَخشىhe fears اللَجاجَةَobstinate persistence مِنكِfrom you فيin الهِجرانِestrangement
Your lover forever clutches his heart,
Your lover forever holds his heart
Fearing your persistence in shunning him.
Fearing your stubbornness in estrangement
إِنif كُنتِyou are عاتِبَةًreproachful فَإِنّيthen indeed I am مُعتِبٌmaking amends
بَعدَafter الإِساءةِwrongdoing فَاِقبَليso accept إِحسانِيmy kindness
If you are reproachful, I will make amends
If you are blaming then I am blamed
After my wrongdoing; so accept my kindness.
After wrongdoing, accept my favor
لاdo not تَقتُليkill رَجُلاًa man يَراكِhe sees you لِماfor what بِهِis in him
مِثلَlike الشَرابِdrink لِغُلَّةِfor the burning thirst of الظَمآنِthe thirsty man
Do not kill a man who, in his suffering, sees you
Do not kill a man who sees in you
As a drink for a thirsty man's burning thirst.
Like drink to the thirst of the parched one
وَلَقَدand indeed أَقولُI say لِقاطِنينَto two dwellers مِنَfrom اهلِناour people
كاناthe two were عَلىin accord with خُلُقيmy disposition مِنَamong الإِخوانِthe friends
And indeed I say to two dwellers among our people,
And I say to the dwellers among our people
Who were friends of a temperament like mine:
You were of my character, of the brethren
ياO صَاحِبيَّmy two companions عَلىupon فُؤادِيmy heart جَمرَةٌan ember
وَبَرىand has worn away الهَوىpassion جِسميmy body كَماas تَرَيانِyou both see
O my two companions, an ember lies upon my heart,
Oh my friend, there are embers on my heart
And passion has worn my body away, as you both see.
And the passion has seared my body, as you see
أَمُرَقّيانِwill you two convey إِلىto سَلامَةSalama أَنتُماyou two
ماwhat قَدindeed لَقيتُI have suffered بِهاthrough her وَتَحتَسِبانِand you both seek reward
Will you two convey to Salama
You two, hasten to safety
What I have suffered through her, and seek a reward for it?
Not what I have faced and you both assume
لاnot أَستَطيعُI can الصَبرَendurance عَنهاwithout her إِنَّهاindeed she
مِنof مُهجَتيmy soul نَزَلَتshe has settled بِكُلِّin every مَكانِplace
I cannot endure being without her, for she
I cannot be patient from her, she
Has settled in every part of my soul.
Flowed from my entrails to every place
