O man given over to youthful passion,

O man entrusted with youth

And an old man's youthful passion, when he feels it, is mere self-consolation.

And the exuberance of the elder when he is exuberant

Do good for yourself before your death

And act, for there is no path to immortality.

And work, for there is no way to immortality

And death is the dissolution of a transitory stay

For every long-lived person, a day must come

There must come a day for every long-lived one

On which the span of his life is completed.

In which the duration of his life is completed

And people move in successive groups toward their appointed end:

And people are sent on to a term for them

One generation of theirs passes away, and another is created.

A generation passes for them, and a generation is born
