O kindler of the fire on the heights of Iḍam,

Kindle it, for you have stirred an unending longing.

O kindler of the fire, kindle it, for it has

A radiance that stirs the sorrow-stricken lover’s heart.

A fire whose glow shone when kindled for us—

A woman of Saʿd, whose coy charm cures sickness.

And many a reproacher blamed me for her, so I told him:

What I endure because of her has wasted my body and my blood.

So you have not been stirred by a sorrow you once hoped for,

Nor gazed upon that dwelling from nearby.

Your nights at Khākh will not return

As you knew them, nor the days at Dhū Salam.
