Men to the rescue, for your ever-renewed anguish,

And for what you hope for from Aqilah tomorrow!

You hope for promises—Adam's resurrection is nearer than their fulfillment—

That have brought ruin to the stricken heart.

Do you remember, Aqil, or have you been made to forget it,

Since my departure, by the turns of this corrupting age—

My day and yours at al-Aqiq, when love

Was whole between us, its bonds unscattered?

I have two nights: one is honey-sweet,

    In which I meet the beloved under the star of good fortune;

And one that brings my cares back upon me, as though I

Were suspended from al-Farqad until morning.
