هَلis there? فيin ادِّكارِremembering الحَبيبِthe beloved مِنany حَرَجِsin
أَمor هَلis there? لِهَمِّfor the sorrow of الفؤادِthe heart مِنany فَرَجِrelief
Is there any sin in remembering the beloved?
Is there shame in remembering the beloved,
Or is there any relief for the heart’s sorrow?
Or relief for the anguish of my heart?
أَمor كَيفَhow أَنسىI forget رَحِيلناour departure حُرُماًin pilgrim consecration
يَومَthe day حَلَلناwe camped بِالنَّخلِat the palm grove مِنof أَمَجِAmaj
Or how can I forget our departure as consecrated pilgrims,
How can I forget our parting in sanctity
On the day we camped at the palm grove of Amaj,
The day we departed through the palm trees.
يَومَthe day يَقولُsays الرَسولُthe messenger قَدalready أذِنَتshe has given permission
فائتِso come عَلىwith غَيرِno رِقبَةٍsurveillance فَلِجِthen enter
The day the messenger says, “She has given permission—
The day the Messenger said, "It is time."
so come, with no one watching, and enter.”
"Depart freely without hindrance."
أَقبَلتُI came أَسعىhastening إِلىtoward رِحالِهِمtheir tents
فيin نَفحَةٍa waft مِنof نَسيمِهاher breeze الأَرِجِfragrant
I came hastening toward their tents,
I rushed to join their caravan
In a waft of her fragrant breeze.
In a fragrant breeze perfumed with basil.
