إِمّاif تُصِبنيstrike me المَناياthe fates of death وَهيَand they لاحِقَةٌbound to overtake
وَكُلُّand every جَنبٍside لَهُfor it قَدalready حُمَّhas been ordained مُضطَجَعُa resting place
If death should strike me—and it is bound to overtake me—
and every side has a resting place ordained for it,
فَقَدthen indeed جَزَيتُI have repaid بَنيthe sons of حَزمٍHazm بِظُلمِهِمُfor their injustice
وَقَدand indeed جَزَيتُI have repaid زُرَيقاًZurayq بِالَّذيfor what صَنَعواthey did
then I have already repaid Banu Hazm for their injustice,
and I have repaid Zurayq for what they did.
قَومٌa people أَبىrejected طَبعbaseness الأَخلاقِof character أَوَّلُهُمtheir forebear
فَهُمand so they عَلىupon ذاكَthat مِنin أَخلاقِهِمtheir character طُبِعواwere molded
A people whose forebear rejected baseness of character;
and so, in character, they were molded on that pattern.
وَإِنand if أُناسٌsome men وَنَواwere remiss عَنin كُلِّevery مَكرُمَةٍnoble deed

And if some men were remiss in every noble deed,
and their reach fell short of its breadth, these men could encompass it.
إِنّيindeed I رَأَيتُsaw غَداةَon the morning of السوقِthe market مَحضَرَهُمtheir assembly
إِذwhen نَحنُwe نَنظُرُlooked on ماwhat يُتلىwas being recited وَنَستَمِعُand listened
Indeed, I saw their assembly on the morning of market day,
as we looked on and listened to what was being recited.
