أَهوىI love أُمَيَّةَUmayya إِنif شَطَّتshe went far away وَإِنand if قَرُبَتshe drew near
يَوماًone day وَأُهديand I offer لَهاto her نُصحيmy sincere counsel وَأَشعاريand my poems
I love Umayya, whether she goes far away or draws near
I yearn for Ummayah though she be far or near
One day; and I offer her my sincere counsel and my poems.
One day, and my advice and poetry I send to her
وَلَوand even if وَرَدتُI came for water عَلَيهاto her الفَيضَthe overflowing stream ماnot حَفَلَتshe cared
وَلاand not شَفَتshe quenched عَطَشيmy thirst مِنfrom مائِهِits water الجاريflowing
And even if I came to her at the overflowing stream, she would not care,
And if she came upon abundance, she'd not care
Nor would she quench my thirst from its flowing water.
Nor quench my thirst with water she could spare
لاdo not تأوِيَنَّever pity لِحَزميٍّfor a Hazmi رَأَيتَyou saw بِهِin him
ضُرّاًsuffering وَلَوand even if طُرِحَwas cast الحَزميُّthe Hazmi فيinto النارِthe fire
Never pity a Hazmi in whom you have seen
Give no shelter to my prudent views therein
Suffering, even if the Hazmi were cast into the fire—
Though thrown in fire, this prudence stay unseen
