وَإِنَّكِand indeed you إِنif تَنزَحgoes far away بِكِwith you الدَارُthe dwelling آتِكُمI come to you all
وَشيكاًsoon وَإِنand if يُصعِدgoes up-country بِكِwith you العيسُthe pale camels أُصعِدِI go up-country
And surely, if your dwelling carries you far away, I shall come to you all
If you move out of the house, I will come to you soon,
soon; and if the pale camels bear you up-country, I too go up-country.
And if fate takes you up high, I will climb up.
وَإِنand if غُرتِyou went to the lowlands غُرناwe went to the lowlands حَيثُwherever كُنتِyou were وَغُرتُمُand you all went to the lowlands
أَوَor انجَدتِyou went upland أَنجَدناwe went upland مَعwith المُتَنَجِّدِthe one heading upland
And if you go to the lowlands, we go there, wherever you are and you all descend;
If you are wronged, we will avenge you wherever you are wronged,
or if you go upland, we go upland with whoever heads there.
Or if you seek help, we will aid you like others seeking aid.
مَتىwhen ماever تَحُلِّيyou settle مِنamong ذُرىheights الأَرضِthe land تَلعَةًa ravine
أَزُركِI visit you وَيَكثُرand becomes frequent حَيثُwherever كُنتِyou were تَرَدُّديmy repeated visits
Whenever you settle in a ravine among the land's heights,
Whenever you wander the lands aimlessly,
I shall visit you, and wherever you are, my visits will be frequent.
I will help you and frequent wherever you frequent.
وَإِنand indeed كِدتُI nearly شَوقاًout of longing موهِناًlate at night وَذَكَرتُهاand I remembered her
لأَرجِعَindeed turn back بِالرَوحاءِat al-Rawha' عَوديmy return عَلىupon بَديmy starting point
And indeed, from longing, late at night as I remembered her, I nearly
If I nearly die of ardent love and recollection of you
turned back at al-Rawha', retracing my steps.
My soul will return with the winds to my body.
وَقُلتُand I said لِعَينيto my eye قَدindeed شَقيتُI have suffered بِذِكرِهاthrough remembering her
فَجوديso give generously بِماءِwith the water المُقلَتَينِthe two eyes أَوor اجمُديremain dry
And I said to my eye, 'I have indeed suffered from remembering her;
And I said to my eyes that have suffered from remembering her,
so pour forth the water of both eyes, or remain dry.'
"Flow with the waters of tears or be still."
أَجدكَare you in earnest? تَنسىyou forget أُمَّUmm (mother of) عَمروٍAmr وَذِكرُهاand remembering her
شِعارُكَyour undergarment دونَbeneath الثَوبِthe robe فيin كُلِّevery مَرقَدِresting place
Do you truly forget Umm Amr, when the memory of her
I find that you forget Umm 'Amr and the mention of her
is your undergarment beneath your robe in every bed?
Is your motto, more than clothes in every abode.
فَإِنfor if تَتَّبِعهاyou pursue her تُغضِyou shut عَيناًan eye عَلىupon القَذىthe grit
وَإِنand if تَجتَنِبهاyou shun her بَعدafter ماwhat نِلتَyou attained تَكمدِyou pine away
For if you pursue her, you shut an eye upon grit;
So if you follow her, you will shut an eye to motes,
and if you shun her after what you have gained, you pine away.
And if you avoid her after getting what you want, you will shrivel.
