And indeed, I am summoned by love of Umm Jaʿfar

And her neighbors, at any hour—and I answer.

And indeed, I visit the house though I do not love it,

And often shun the house, though it is dear.

The world is pleasant to me at times, yet it

Turns so foul that it scarcely becomes pleasant.

And whenever I come to you, beaming,

A face appears among you, scowling at me.

And I overlook things from you that distress me,

And am called to what pleases you, and I answer.

And I hold my soul back from you, though my soul yearns

For your nearness, and the walk to you is short.

And I have dwelt so long on thoughts of you that I seem

A man wounded in the head, bereft in the dwellings' shade.

I confide to you what I suffer; in my soul is a longing

That creeps between my skin and bones.

Consider me a man—either an innocent one you have wronged,

Or a wrongdoer, a sinner, who then repents.

So do not leave my soul scattered, for it

Has almost melted away from grief over you.

I swear to you by God: I keep our bond as long as you keep it with me,

And praise you for what you have bestowed on me, and repay you.

And I take what you give freely, and indeed I

Turn away from what you dislike, fearful.
