هلْ ما جَزيْناهمُ قتلَى على لَثَمٍ

هلْ ما جَزيْناهمُ قتلَى على لَثَمٍ

وفي الطّلاقةِ منْ بؤْسٍ وإنعْامِ

وفي الطّلاقةِ منْ بؤْسٍ وإنعْامِ

Was our requital to them slain men at Latham,

Have we not avenged those slain at the watering-place

Did we not requite them with slain men upon the veil,

and at al-Talaqah, misery and bounty?

And in granting gifts and freedom from distress?

And in the release lay both misery and blessing?

كنّا سَواءً فزادونا فزادَهُمُ

كنّا سَواءً فزادونا فزادَهُمُ

فكُمِّلَتْ باختيارٍ رمْيةُ الرّامي

فكُمِّلَتْ باختيارٍ رمْيةُ الرّامي

We were equal; then they surpassed us, and he surpassed them.

We were on equal terms till they wronged us more,

We were equals; they exceeded, so He exceeded them,

Thus, by choice, the archer’s shot was perfected.

So the throw of the skilled archer was made complete.

And the archer's shot was perfected by choice.

وإذْ يلِحُّ على سعدٍ جيادَهُم

وإذْ يلِحُّ على سعدٍ جيادَهُم

سعدُ بن مُرَّةَ لا سعدُ بن همّامِ

سعدُ بن مُرَّةَ لا سعدُ بن همّامِ

And when their steeds press hard upon Sa'd—

And when their steeds pressed upon Sa'd,

And when their steeds press hard upon Sa'd—

Sa'd ibn Murrah, not Sa'd ibn Hammam.

Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, not Sa'd ibn Ubadah.

Sa'd bin Murrah, not Sa'd bin Hammam.
