You promised, while the lover was given his fill of sighs,

The son of the cloud, mixed with the daughter of the grape.

So come, O women who pour clear wine,

With it, just before dawn smiles, close at hand.

For the tickling of the cups bestows

On me a drunken stammer that toys with me.

And you, O ʿAlw, sheathe your glance, for it has

In the heart the impact of the sharp edges of patterned swords.

You laughed; then the ewer wept, sobbing.

So your saliva and mouth are like wine and bubbles.

And we are in a garden where the breeze has trailed

A hem wet with the tears of the clouds.

When I recall Najd and its dweller there,

I place the girdle of my self-restraint in the hand of rapture.
