We sought abundant bounty, for good is sought.

We found no shade more refreshing than yours, or more ample.

We visited the sons of Ka'b and thought their faces

rising suns from which the gazing eyes recoiled.

You are the rain when generosity's horizon grows dust-gray,

and the lion of al-Shara when martial might reddens in battle.

Your onslaught is like the sudden sweep, in its course,

of a torrent that overflows when its first surge is checked.

But for you, no raincloud's morning showers would be suckled

by thickets from which the clouds flee, crying out.

Yours is the rain-laden palm, whose bounty surpasses

rain an ankle deep upon the face of the earth.

And the resolve of a lion with two cubs: if he scents an affront,

he plunges a fang into rose-red gore and makes it lap.

And an assembly where eyes are lowered in awe,

from which no shameful word is reported, nor idle talk.

    No scheming slanderer utters falsehood

within it, nor does a listening ear draw the tale-bearer near.

The mighty ruler's mouth all but kisses its carpets

when his cheek rubs along their edges.

When you churn counsel, while the crisis knots

its forelocks, the pure milk stands clear of the foam.

    هَزَزْتَ حُساماً للجَماجِمِ مِفْدَغا

    You sheathe the blades until war is made pregnant;

then you brandish a keen sword that crushes skulls.

It goes forth while death races along its edges,

bringing blood that has surged within the doomed.

There is no wise course but to crimson its edge

with it beneath the dust-cloud's skirts, and dye it.

There is no glory until you leave your rival overwhelmed,

the tall spears keeping him from ravaging or breaking free.

So fall upon him at dawn with biting, speckled serpents,

and march to him by night with stinging scorpions.

And make the spear's point bleed, for victory hovers

over you when spear-thrusts spurt blood.

And every man who repays the wrongdoer for his deed

has neither discarded prudence nor harmed religion.

May he be your ransom whose hide satire folds

over ticks, since it found no place in it fit for tanning.

And wealth has raised him up, except that he

has thereby prepared a tattered reputation for censure.

For the increase of wealth without giving

mars a man like a tooth crowded by one growing askew.

    وإنْ زَأرَ الضِّرغامُ في غابِهِ ثَغا

    When the noble are summoned, he shrinks himself away;

and if the lion roars in its thicket, he bleats.

And if camel throat-sacs bellow on the day of boasting,

he opens his mouth wide, seeking chewed-over words.

Hopes circle thirstily round the stagnant water of his palms,

but draw from your right hand an abundant sea.

And many a wandering ode, with which a mature camel crosses the earth,

bellowing when necks sway from exhaustion:

through it the reciter passes round cups of aged wine,

which leave the people's eloquent speaker lisping.

    إذا قِيدَ كُرْهاً في أزِمَّتِها ضَغا

    And every poet stumbles short of its rhymes;

when led unwilling in its reins, he whines.

So I tamed it until it adorned itself with diction

that sends other tongues trailing behind its untamed words.

I behold you with an eye that never turned its glance from you,

nor revealed a heart inclined toward anyone but you.

May you remain glory's bedfellow in sovereignty's embrace,

where you have donned a cast collar of crescent moons.
