فلَمْso not يَلْقَencounter ذُوone possessed of صَبوَةٍpassion ماwhat لقِيناwe encountered
فلَمْ يَلْقَ ذُو صَبوَةٍ ما لقِينا
We concealed our love and restrained our yearning;
We concealed our love and suppressed our yearning,
so no lover has endured what we endured.
So no impetuous one met what we met.

While you spread the secret of love,
While you spread the secret of love
now to the left, now to the right.
Sometimes northwards, other times southwards.

لِ لَمْ يَتْرُكِ الدّمْعُ سِراً مَصونا
And when you called to one another to depart,
And when you called out with pleasure -
tears left no secret safely hidden.
Why did tears not remain a guarded secret?

And how can we attempt to conceal it
when tears have already drenched our eyelids?
When tears have moistened the eyelids?

You trusted our hearts with the secret;
You trusted our hearts with the secret -
then why did you not suspect our eyes?
Why then did you not blame the eyes for it?

مَهارى بسِرْبِ عَذارى حُدِينا
And among those that revealed it on the day at al-ʿUdhayb
And from what the camels uttered on the day of departure
were Mahri she-camels, urged on by song, bearing a troop of maidens.
My female companions blended with a herd of young she-camels.

فلاحَتْ بُدوراً وماسَتْ غُصونا
Young women whom separation brought forth:
Fair companions brought forth by the resting place,
they shone as full moons and swayed as branches.
Dazzling with brightness and fruitful with branches.

And they reached toward us from the curtained chamber, slender-necked,
They stretched to us from the howdahs songs
and lowered their wide eyes while gazing sidelong.
And lowered over the sights their bashful eyes.

تَعُدُّ الرّكائِبُ بِيناً فَبينا
I yearn for her, and short of reaching her,
I yearn for her, and without her
the riding camels count separation upon separation.
The riding camels reckon the distances between us.

And how far Iraq lies from al-Akhshabayn,
Where is Iraq compared to the two encampments -
even if the lover strains a keen eye!
Even if my tears make an eyelid flood?

By your lives, O two camel-drivers,
By your lives, O you two guides,
halt, and help me in what I suffer.
Stop, and regarding what I suffer, weep.

For the mounts saw at al-ʿAqiq
For the camels saw in the valley
the worn-out dwellings of Suʿda’s people.
Covenants from the family of Saʿda in decay.

So their eyes sprinkle tears,
Their glances pour down tears
and their breaths tear the saddle-girth apart.
And their breaths light up the kindling.

And the mirage mirrors, when it lifts
The mirage relates, when it is disturbed,
her camel-litters, the sea buoying ships.
Their complaints - the sea roars with ships.

رُ مِنْ أرحُلِ الرّازِحاتِ العُهونا
And there must be a sigh that sends flying
A sigh must escape
the woolen tufts from the saddles of exhausted she-camels.
From the chests of the moaning, lovelorn women.

May those she-camels be watered with copious rain,
The cups of generosity were emptied for us from a noble one,
who obeyed love and defied their nose-rings!
Who rebelled against love and disobeyed the open deserts.

O dwelling of the withholding woman, what has befallen you?
O you who blame the withholding one, what has emboldened you,
And why is the protected ground humbled and subdued?
And why do you cower, weakened and submissive against the fever?

Then where are the tents that were shaded
Where are the tents that were shaded
by brown spears, in which I glimpse death?
By a pleasurable gathering in which I delighted in intimacy?

It has grieved me to see her dwelling,
It was displeasing to me to see her abode
with doves composing melodies within it.
Where doves coo their melodies.

If the morning clouds withhold their rain,
If the passing clouds denied me,
I am not sparing of my tears over it.
I will not begrudge it my tears.

As though the showers from that downpour
As if the showers from its direction
were gifts from the finest of the Scholar’s sons among us.
Are the gifts of the Blessed People in this year.

Radiant, truly the loftiest-headed of them,
I boast to their greatest one, lofty of status,
and the brightest-browed among Quraysh.
And clearest of forehead among Quraysh.

When he declares his lineage, al-Abtahayn are encompassed
When the glories of the heir to the two open plains are recounted,
by his glorious deeds, which mount al-Hajun.
His achievements, he mounted the pavilions.

أبَتْ غَيرَ عَبدِ مَنافٍ قَطينا
And that edifice, since it was founded,
That blessed clan, ever since it was founded,
has refused any resident but ʿAbd Manaf.
Would never accept other than a descendant of Manaf.

There they planted brown spears above the heights of glory,
With it they planted the tent pegs atop the high grounds,
and tethered there the neighing steeds, standing poised.
And with it they tied taut the towering tent poles.

And they unleashed against Yaʿrub’s two sons
And they launched against the two sons of Yaʿrub
raids that kindled a savage war.
A war that kindles raging fires.

And Banu Hashim settled in the valley flats
The children of Hashim camped in the valley,
as lions settle, guarding their lair.
In the place of wild beasts protecting their den.

Do enemies seek to match their reach, when even the winds,
Does the enemy desire their condition while the winds
whenever they race toward it, grow footsore?
Blow towards them violently?

God would not let noble deeds accept
God refused that the honored ones
lean honor and fat wealth.
Accept a meager offer or wealth of goods.

through which I am safe from treacherous Time.
I have entrusted to withstand hard times.

And I, though calamities have shaken me,
Even if disasters shake me,
still shake disgrace from the trailing hems of my two cloaks.
I easily cast off the surplus of my cloak.

And Khindif knows that I
Kindif has learned that I
am worthy of attaining the heights of honor.
Obtain the heights of glory purely.

And the guest has a right, and ʿAmr al-ʿUla
A guest has a right, and ʿAmr of high lineage
counts the rights he owes as debts.
Considers rights upon him as debts.

And when the valley flats of the Hijaz shuddered,
When the abodes of Hijaz shuddered,
he spared his people famine’s grip for a time.
He sufficed his people the trial of that time.

And the blood of pregnant she-camels flowed before him
Before him the blood of the impostors gushed
over the flames of the fire, for guests arriving by night.
Onto the flames of fire for the transgressors.

You are his son, and people dispute
from your two palms the cloud that pours its rain.
Your two rests - the inconstant clouds.

So you have continued wrapped in the lofty robes,
passing the months and shedding the years.
Spending months and accumulating years.
