Veiled, he came visiting at darkness's trailing hem—
He came in the tail of darkness cloaked,
A gazelle who grew angry whenever I sought his favor.
A friend when pleased is anger provoked,
يُعرِضُturns away عَنّيfrom me وَالكأسُand the cup فيin يَدِهِhis hand
وَهوَand he بِأَنوارِهاwith its radiance قَدِalready اِختَضَباhas been tinged
He turns away from me, the cup in his hand,
He turns from me while the cup's in his hand,
And he has already been tinged with its radiance.
And with its lights he's brightly soiled.
ياO ساقِيَcupbearer of الخَمرِwine إِنَّindeed ريقَكَyour saliva ليto me
صَهباءُtawny wine تُكسىَis clothed مِنfrom ثَغرِكَyour mouth الحَبَباbubbles
O wine-bearer, your saliva is, to me,
O pourer of wine, your saliva to me,
Tawny wine, clothed in bubbles from your mouth.
Is pure honey from your lovely lips poured,
يَفديكَmay ransom you نَفسيmy soul وَالنَّاسُand the people غَيرَexcept أَبيmy father
فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I أَشرَفُthe noblest الأَنامِof mankind أَباin paternal descent
May my soul and all people except my father ransom you,
I'd ransom you with my soul, though folk not my sire,
For I am the noblest of mankind in paternal descent.
For I'm the noblest of people, O lord.
هَلُمَّcome نَشرَبْlet us drink راحاًwine مُعَتَّقَةًaged
صَفَتْbecame clear وَرَقَّتْand became delicate وَعُمِّرَتْand was aged حُقُباfor ages
Come, let us drink aged wine,
Come let's drink vintage matured,
It has grown clear and delicate, and been aged for ages.
Refined, clarified, and aged for years,
إِنif راضَهاtamed it الماءُwater أَذعَنَتْit yielded وَجَنَتْand reaped

If water tames it, it yields; and reaped
If pleased by water, ecstasy she grants,
From it by souls are joy and rapture.
Delighting souls with joy and cheer.
ذاكَthat لُجَينٌsilver وَهَذِهِand this ذَهَبٌgold
يَنتَهِبانِthe two plunder اللُّجَينَsilver وَالذَّهَباand gold
That is silver, and this is gold;
That is pure silver, and this is gold,
The two plunder silver and gold.
Plundering silver and gold galore,
بِهاwith it طَوَيتُI spent الشَّبابَyouth فيin جِدَةٍaffluence

With it I spent my youth in affluence,
With it my youth in robes I wrapped,
Suckling from its milk, which has run dry,
Suckling its house until ran no more.
أَيّامَin the days when كانَwas الحِمىthe protected land لَناfor us وَطَناًa homeland
لاnot يَرهَبُfears الجارُthe neighbor عِندَهُwithin it النُّوَباmisfortunes
In the days when the protected land was our homeland,
Days when encampment was home to us,
Where the neighbor feared no misfortunes.
No neighbor there fearing the nomad's night raid,
وَنَحنُand we فيin حُلَّةِthe robe of النَّعيمِbliss بِهِin it
نَسحَبُwe trail ذَيلَthe hem of الثَّراءِwealth ماas long as اِنسَحَباit trailed
And we there, in the robe of bliss,
And we in the garb of bliss therein,
Trailed the hem of wealth as long as it would trail.
Dragging the tail of wealth ne'er dragged.
