Umayma came by night, while the stars inclined toward setting,

and night trailed its skirts across the preserve.

Among bashful, white-bosomed maidens she came,

their waists complaining to me of their haunches.

And she renews for me, as dawn bears away the gloom,

    estrangement—and, when darkness settles, union.

She rose before me from the curtained chambers, a sun,

and gazed at me in her coyness, a gazelle.

So I kissed her, while some of her jewelry concealed

my secret, and some informed the reproachers.

And when morning spread its mantle, I kept

complaining of the jeweled sash and thanking the anklet.
