قَضَتْsatisfied وَطَراًa desire مِنِّيfrom me اللَّياليthe nights فَلمyet did not أَبُحْI speak out
بِشَكْوَىwith a complaint وَلَمْand did not يَدْنَسْbecome sullied عَلَيَّupon me قَميصُa shirt
The nights have had their fill of me, yet I have voiced no
The nights have passed taking a piece of me, yet I did not complain
complaint, nor has the shirt I wear been sullied.
Nor did my garment become stained, I value my honor
I set a high value بِعِرْضيon my honor وَالنَّوائِبُand the calamities تَعْتَريassail
وَغَيْريand another besides me يَبيعُsells العِرْضَhonor وَهْوَwhile it is رَخيصُcheap
I hold my honor dear while calamities assail me,
And calamities befall me, while others sell their honor cheap
while another sells his honor cheap.
Ulya knew my nobility, that I aspire
وَقَدْand indeed عَلِمَتْhas learned عُلْياthe noblest of كِنانَةَKinānah أَنَّنيthat I
عَلىon ماwhat يزينُadorns الأَكْرَمِينَthe noblest حَريصُkeen
And the noblest of Kinānah well know that I
To what adorns the most honorable, protecting my face
am keen on what adorns the noblest.
When fate frowns, gloomy and downcast
أَصونُI safeguard عَلىagainst الأَطْماعِgreedy desires وَجْهاًa face لِبِشْرِهِfor its cheerfulness
إِذاwhen عَبَسَscowls الدَّهْرُTime الخَؤونُthe treacherous وَبيصُa gleam
I guard my face against greed; its cheer
My back bears the burdens of misery, my stomach
gleams when treacherous Time scowls.
Empty of the provisions of the vile, only a shirt
فَظَهْرِيso my back بِأَعْباءِwith the burdens of الخَصاصَةِpoverty مُثْقَلٌweighed down
وَبَطْنِيَand my belly مِنْof زادِthe food of اللِّئامِthe ignoble خَميصُempty
So my back is weighed down by the burdens of poverty,
and my belly is empty of the fare of the ignoble.
